Great for youngsters.

I read this book at my kid sister's request. She noticed I was reading a graphic novel, and since she's currently in a Pokemon craze, she slipped this book to me and said, "Look, a graphic novel!"
So I read it.

I haven't been into the Pokemon franchise--besides the main games--in years, seeing as I'm currently 23, so I've forgotten much; but if my memory serves true, this book is a novelization of two Pokemon mini films (which, I believe, served as introductory features to the first two major films).
As a graphic novel aimed toward youth, it stands up fairly well. The editor aptly used bright and cheerful film cells for pictures, and organized text in a coherent and orderly manner. It's no professional graphic novel as many that I've read, but, since it's for the younger crowd, it's great.

Lots of lush colors and a cheerful storyline, as well as the absence of inscrutable text, makes this volume a great read for young Pokemon fans.

Excellent Novelization

It contains scenes which were not filmed, or cut from the theatrical release. Plus the sequence of events is SLIGHTLY different.

the ending of the novel is much better than the ending of the movie.

Kidnapped and taken out to sea, Thomas fights with the sailors, steals ale from the hold, runs from a battle with a female pirate and falls in love with the captain’s granddaughter.

But it isn't until he finds out who he really is that Thomas’ restless soul finds its way home.

No ending??

I liked the book. It was interesting and I was caught up in the story well enough. The fact that there was no ending brings my rating to a two star. It would be much better if the authors would not set the book up as needing a sequel and then never delivering one...

A Promise Kept Leads to Adventure

"Would you make me a promise," a young boy asks the sea captain, "If ever I should become like me father, will you dunk me under the water until I cannot breathe." However, ten years later the boy is Thomas, a petty thief and drunk. That promise is but a faded childhood memory when he, and his vagrant friend Farrell, are shanghaied onto a ship.

Set around the time of the Revolutionary War, the dialogue is written in the dialect of the time and includes much of the jargon of the sea. In some novels, this can get in the way of the story, but here the author does a nice balance of modern English, dialect and jargon.

Thomas and Farrell are both multi-faceted characters with some good and, at the start of the story, many bad qualities. Farrell quickly adjusts to the sea, but Thomas resists. The slow evolution of his character is the focus of the novel. The other characters are well defined, but less explored. Perhaps in a sequel we will see more of them.

Joyce Scott is a Christian and her faith is reflected in a couple of the characters in the story. However, while her faith is lightly sprinkled throughout the novel, it remains an adventure story, with a just a hint of romance.

For full disclosure, I should mention that Joyce is a friend and I read and critiqued parts of the manuscript. However, when she announced the publication I eagerly bought and read the novel. I would not have reviewed the story if I had not enjoyed it. The ending clearly sets up for a sequel which I have not seen but look forward to reading.

1 exciting day reading get away for me

I was lucky enough to read the review of your book in the Centralia Chronicle several months ago. Much to my surprise, I met your husband at the doctor's office and he noticed I was reading the Kindle. He asked how I liked it and I informed him I had over 450 books already in my library. He told me about your book and I was so excited to read it, that I ordered it while he was at his appointment. I was already reading chapter 5 when he came out, by the end of the day I had completed the book, by using the audio while I was canning. You have a great talent to make the characters come to life and a passion to keep the book moving rapidly through the pages. I hope to see (and hear) more of you and your books in the future.
