About the Author
Marinela Burada is Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania. She is the author and co-author of several monographs and research articles on topics pertaining to contact linguistics, lexiography, and contrastive rhetoric. Her book on Rhetorical Features in Student Persuasive Writing probes into the specificities of academic literacy and composition in keeping with the ecology of writing. She has been the editor of the proceedings of the Conference of British and American Studies since 2003. Oana Tatu is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Letters at Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania, and has a PhD in Linguistics. Her research and professional interests fall within the scope of literary translation, linguistics, and Renaissance English literature, and have materialized in several publications in these fields, most notably, the monograph Translating Shakespeare: The Challenge of the Romanian Language. She has also co-organized the Conference on British and American Studies, an academic forum hosted by Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania since 2011. Raluca Sinu is Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Letters at Transilvania University of Brasov in Romania. She holds a PhD in Linguistics, and is the author and co-author of various articles and books in fields such as audiovisual translation, applied linguistics, and lexicography. Her book Humour in Film Subtitling represents an investigation into the strategies Romanian translators employ in dealing with linguistic and extralinguistic humour. She has been a co-organizer of the Conference on British and American Studies since 2011.

About the Author

David Schmidtz is Kendrick Professor of Philosophy and joint Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona. He is the author of Person, Polis, Planet (2008), Elements of Justice (2006), and Rational Choice and Moral Agency (1995), and coauthor of A Brief History of Liberty (2010).

Elizabeth Willott is a Principal Research Specialist in the School of Geography and Development at the University of Arizona, where she is a primary investigator on a National Science Foundation grant researching mosquito ecology in Tucson. She is also Curator of Butterfly Magic at Tucson Botanical Gardens, where she oversees the running of the butterfly display and education relative to it.

About the Author
Laurent Mannoni is former Curator of the equipment collections of the Cinematheque Francaise and the Centre National de la Cinematographie. His books include The Great Art of Light and Shadow: Archaeology of the Cinema (2000). Werner Nekes is an experimental filmmaker and media-researcher who has created one of the world's finest collections of optical devices and art and ephemera relating to illusion. Marina Warner is a novelist, critic and cultural historian. Her non-fiction includes From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers (1994) and No Go the Bogeyman: Scaring, Lulling and Making Mock (1998).

A treasure trove of optical delights!

Brilliant! This was the catalogue for the exhibition, of the same title, at Melbourne's ACMI which I saw in 2006, a collection of 500 historic objects, books, prints, instruments and optical ephemera gathered by fanatic private collector Werner Nekes. The memory of this show stays with me as one of the most exciting I have seen. Nekes was at the opening and was clearly a lover of all things optical, whether it is art, science or magic. This hard-bound, comprehensively illustrated catalogue is everything I need to revive a formative experience anytime I like. Highly recommended.
