About the Author

Indranil Goswami, Ph.D., PE, is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland and he teaches and conducts research at Morgan State University. Dr. Goswami has served as the president of the Baltimore Chapter of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. He has taught PE (Civil) Review and FE Review courses, and received the Educator of the Year Award from the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers in 2003.

Can pass the PE with only this book. Very happy with experience!

Hands down the best prep for the PE exam. I know it sounds like an exaggeration let me explain why. The Lindberg book is the size of a phone book with a layout like an encyclopedia or a medical textbook. No engineering book follows such a convoluted format. Goswami's book is set following basic concepts to complex details. I was able to read the entire book cover to cover and get a sense of being able to understand all the subjects on the PE. The book includes some great practice problems that are only a little harder than the NCEES practice exam questions but easier than the horrible 6 Minute Solutions. The book has an easy to follow index and you are able to use this book much more efficiently than Lindberg. I have thoroughly compared the geotech section in Lindberg to Goswami's and for example; on the Shallow square foundations Lindberg gives you the the general formula with values to modify the equation for a square foundation. Goswami gives you the formula for a square foundation without confusing you no values to modify. Also Goswami gives you a table with more values for Phi instead of having you interpolate like Lindberg. There might be some complex detail lacking for the depth section of the PE. It would be impossible to include this in the book. Sort of what Lindberg tried to do and failed. So you still need advanced section references.

The Lindberg book was really expensive. Honestly I could have done without it. Just buy Goswami's guide and get reference materials for the in depth section. Buy early edition reference books and the whole package should run you about 400 for geotech. Half if you got Lindbergs.

Goswami also gives a great review class for the PE google his name. You study before hand from this book and ask him tough questions in a webminar. I talked to people that took school of PE and that class is basically for people that are unable to study. The school of PE class goes over formulas and theories. Don't waste your time studying in a class. Do it beforehand and troubleshoot hard questions with Goswami. Goswami is a Structural PE at Morgan State in Maryland. No other class has a PhD teaching it. Oh and did I mention Goswami's class is half of what school of PE charges and about 1/3 of what the Test café rip off charges.

Good overview of topics with focus on PE exam

Two huge benefits of this book made it indispensable for my PE study:

1. This book seems to have been written expressly for the Civil PE Exam, which means that it is organized more closely to how the exam is organized, and gives you a targeted study tool to prep you for the exam.

2. Available in electronic format, which meant that I could take it with me while traveling (unrealistic with the other books). Also, searching was much easier.

However, I would suggest having supplemental materials in case you find explanations that are not comprehensive enough. Occasionally, I did find terms that weren't extremely well-explained, a couple topics for the exam were missing, and some variables were not clearly defined. That supplemental book for me was the PPI "bible," which I found helpful as a reference but did not help focus my study for the exam. Together with these two books and a practice exam, I passed the April 2013 exam on the first try.

All I needed

This book was well worth it and so much cheaper than the alternative. I used it from the beginning of my studies. I had a CERM borrowed from work and realized that was way too much and too confusing when I started studying. Granted I did put in a lot of studying hours mostly doing problems from Goswami's problem sets (which are much harder than the test), but I can say that this book is all I needed for the morning and afternoon geotech.
I recommended this book to a few people and they all agree that's what they should have used the first time.
Keep in mind though, that for Geotech, a lot of it is theory, concept and experience. So, if you're relying on this book to teach you that, you might be in trouble. You need to go back to your school notes, labs, field work etc... for a refresher on that.

I bought this because it was 'required' for my graduate level medical imaging course. It is however, not up to par for what a biomed. eng. or medical physicist would want/need. It is more appropriate for a medical student interested in imaging or a radiology resident. For the course, we quickly ended up referring to Jerry Prince's Medical Imaging Signals and Systems, which goes much more in depth into the math, yet explains it really well.

My Kindle version does not have page numbers!

This is a great textbook, author has a nice writing style. But, I only uses location numbers, hard to follow when the professor uses a page number for reference!!! Most textbooks you download have both page and location numbers these days. I would not recommend purchasing Kindle version for class until they upgrade to page numbers.

Worked well for my nursing class

The book had well organized material and worked perfectly for my nursing research class. The content helped me to write my own research paper with a proposed study for future research. Some definitions were a little vague, but I just used the internet to fill in the blanks.

BEWARE!!!! The Kindle version of this book has NO PAGE NUMBERS. I sure wish they would have told me that before I purchased it for my kindle. It's an epic mess to try to find a specific mess. The kindle version is not worth the time, money or frustration.

NOT ABOUT INSIGHTS TO THE PORN INDUSTRY. IT'S ABOUT HER LIST OF GRIEVANCES WITH HER FAMILY.

The book is heavily misrepresenting itself in several ways. For example only about 20% of the book has anything to do with the adult industry. By far the majority deals with the author's messed up personal relationships. Another example is that many of the facts are misrepresented either for effect or just to make a better story leading you into getting a distorted view. An example of this would be in the dialogue where the author would say that her mamma would say, "Christy, you get in here right now." Well her name is Melissa Kaye Bardizbanian so it is not very likely that her mother would be calling her Christy unless you believe her parents were clairvoyant and would know that was going to be her stage name in about 15 years. There are many other examples. Her time frames on things are also all out of synch with reality. As far as Melissa's writing ability, she has very big fluffy breasts on a thin frame which is quite attractive, but words are definitely not her thing. Overall, she is not a very nice person as can be seen by the fact that she goes on and on and on about how people hurt her or let her down over and over again. Well a non-narcissistic person would eventually ponder, "Maybe my behavior is contributing to the way people are treating me". Not this author. It is always other people's fault. It really gets tiring to read her lists of grievances. Finally, she doesn't blow the lid off any celebrities that you every heard about, and since there is so much else about the book that is either totally inaccurate or is playing to the grandstands, you have to have your doubts about these revelations. It got two stars, instead of one because there was a little bit about the porn industry that I know was accurate.

A Satisfying Look at Pornography

Christy Canyon has written a very interesting book about her career in pornography. The words feel like the truth. You won't be seduced into believing this is a great career move and you won't be fooled into thinking that Ms. Canyon is the woman you want to take home to meet the folks. She is neither a victim nor a proponent.

I have read other insider books (e.g. Jerry Butler) and outsider books (e.g. Luke Ford) and sexpert books (e.g. Susie Bright, Carol Queen) and saw Boogie Nights but this book was the most satisfying in terms of my curiousity of what it is like to work in XXX. I recommend this book for those who are similarly curious. Those looking for a simple turn on will be disappointed.

Some have criticized this book for an excess of typos. One that I spotted was "striper" instead of "stripper". Well, a spell-checker program would miss that one also. But I have read technical books with more typos than this one. More distracting was the sloppy page layout. I suspect the phrase "orphan management" refers only to the musical Annie as far as this book's producer is concerned. The book would also be better with some pictures - even simple black and white photographs showing Christy Canyon in a pose not intended for a video cassette box.

Fantastic book by and about a fascinating lady

Whether friend, fan or curious stranger, read this! "Lights, Camera, Sex!" is a must for any fan of the legendary Christy Canyon, considered by those who know and care as one of the greatest adult stars of the twentieth century, if not the greatest. But it's more. It is an always interesting story of the adult video industry by a lady who not only survived but thrived. She intersperses industry behind the scenes stories with insights to the life and times of an intelligent and witty "valley girl" and the people and experiences that shaped her.

This book may be disappointing to those who like their adult stars stereotypically stupid sluts. But like other successful and enduring performers, Christy does not fit that clich�d pigeonhole. Ms. Canyon self-published this autobiography. If a mainline publishing house distributed her work and marketed it as a roman a clef by an exciting new author, people who never heard of Christy would have made this the best seller it deserves to be. Canyon refused to compromise, refused censorship, and succeeded her way.

The author, encouraged by her creative writing instructor, has written a lively narrative that will make you laugh and make you cry, while providing introspective on a remarkable life in an entertaining business. Her attention to detail, descriptive prose, prodigious memory, and well-researched vignettes coupled with fascinating flashbacks of the author's formative years make this much more compelling than just another star's life. It follows the author's brief but productive early career, her surprise departure from the adult business, and her first comeback. The author promises a follow-up about her life on the road dancing, but this deserves more than just one sequel. We look forward not only to her continuing story, but some advice books, some comedy, some romance novels and perhaps a screenplay. Turn on the reading lights, put down the camera, and focus on "Lights, Camera, Sex!"

In "Cattle Car Complex," the first of nine interlinked stories in this powerful debut collection, disaffected Manhattan lawyer Adam Posner, a lifelong insomniac and claustrophobic, is stricken with paroxysmal rage on an office elevator as he remembers how his parents, both Holocaust survivors, were transported by cattle car to concentration camps. In a subsequent story, "The Rabbi Double-Faults," the Holocaust shadows 1950s Miami when a seemingly nonchalant rabbi bares his death-camp tattoo during a tennis game with the then-young Adam. Rosenbaum, himself the child of Holocaust survivors, now a law professor at Fordham, casts Adam as the central character of each of these searing tales, but in various guises, at different ages, with different sets of parents. In "Romancing the Yohrzeit Light," a desperately funny story that recalls Philip Roth, Adam is a New York abstract expressionist painter courting a gentile Swedish woman; in "An Act of Defiance," he is a brooding college instructor specializing in Holocaust studies who encounters his Belgian uncle, an Auschwitz survivor, exuberantly alive. With savage irony, these impassioned stories bemoan secular Jews' fragmented families and weak identification with their faith, as well as the chasm between generations that dulls recognition of the full enormity of the Holocaust.

A first collection from Rosenbaum, a Manhattan lawyer turned writer, draws heavily on the author's memories of growing up as the child of Holocaust survivors. ``The Holocaust,'' Rosenbaum writes, ``is the great equalizer of stark interior dramas: Reordering nerves, creating strengths and frailties, transforming individuals into something they would not have otherwise been.'' And those individuals, the ones who survive, will in turn transform those with whom they come in contact, none more so than their children--this is the running theme, the major preoccupation, of these nine stories. Adam Posner, the central figure, is a multifaceted version of the author himself, here a tennis prodigy growing up in Miami Beach, there a lawyer struggling against demons from the past, elsewhere a child summering in a Catskills bungalow colony with a crazy, gambling-addicted mother. Using the pieces like a fragmented mirror, Rosenbaum plays out nine variations on what life could have been for a son of Holocaust survivors, dark improvisations on the themes of death, distrust, and psychic dislocation. In the most successful tales--generally the longer ones--Adam is primarily a witness, a device that effectively allows the reader entry into a psychologically troubled world. Two stories set in the Miami Beach of the '60s, ``The Rabbi Double-Faults'' and ``Lost, In a Sense,'' are particularly astute in their understanding of the inner life of childhood and the emotional confusions generated by the adult world. The weakest story, ``Cattle Car Complex,'' reduces these insights to a weak irony worthy of a failed Twilight Zone episode. Rosenbaum is a writer of promise who must learn to eschew the overwrought metaphor and occasional easy irony. Excellent Portrayal of a Child of Survivors

I wish more people would read this book. As a child of Survivors myself, the author is an excellent writer, giving a truthful portrayal of the life of a 2nd generation adult.
The first short story, concerning an overworked attorney stuck in an elevator who "believes" it is a cattlecar, is incredible. I am also an attorney, and once worked at a large law firm, as did Posner, the main character in the story. Most lawyers at those firms get little sleep, and therefore, their minds easily play games with them. One of the reviews claimed that this story was "overdone", but he fails to realize that for some children of Survivors, our minds work like our parents', in the sense that certain situations remind us of the Holocaust (some call this 'secondary post-traumatic stress disorder'). Rosenbaum did the best job I
have ever seen in depicting this.
The other stories are excellent, as well. One great one, which is humorous, by the way, concerns Posner's having lit a Yahrzeit candle, which commemorates the anniversary of the death of a parent. His beautiful girlfriend, tipsy, bursts into his house and wants to grab him - although he normally would love this, her careless movements threaten to extinguish the candle, which Posner is bent on saving.
Rosenbaum has the talent that a great writer must has - his ability to describe a scene is incredible, his characters are well-developed, and, most importantly, he reveals a world that most people cannot know - the world of the 2nd generation. I am so happy that we have him!

A powerful, thought provoking look at American Jewish life.

This book has made me think about what it means to be a secular Jew in America.For years, my mother has asked me how G-d could have allowedsuch a horrific event as the holocaust to occur, and I would just listen intently and explain that it was not the making of G-d, but of the errors of a human race (Nazism) that has gone evil. Never had I thought of the effect that this tragedy has had on modern Jewish life, and the way that we see OURSELVES according to the perceived silence of our G-d. Thane Rosenbaum has put together a brilliant set of stories about the "disfunctional" Jewish family as a result of the nightmares of our ancestors.The best book I have read in months

This is a really impressive collection that describes some of the most dangerous secret societies and influence they have on humanity. There is speculation on their ultimate goal, and the information overall is well presented and researched. Enjoyable and educational, highly recommended.

lost interest in it so 1 star

A recent Kindle edition freebie.

I read through the first few chapters which was more of a boring forward than anything else, and then several of the chapters on actual secret societies. I really like books about such organizations, but this one just left me uninterested in finishing it so as is my custom with books I start and do not finish, I gave it one star.

What information is presented about the organizations is so limited that the book really does not give much information. It kind of reads like a book report. Maybe that was the point, but I already knew most of what was in the book (at least the part I read) and nothing there was presented in a way that interested me so I just gave up on the book.

The book touched on the organizations, but never more than looked at the surface and I can get that from 5 minutes of reading on the Internet.
