THIS OLD MAN, HE'S A PLAYER

Junichiro Tanizaki is one of the most brillant Japanese writers of the last century. While best known for his family drama The Makioka Sisters, a lot of his books have to do with subjects more at home to Henry Miller. Tanizaki is a master of illustrating sexual obsession in novels that would be erotic if they weren't so haunted and disturbed.
The Diary of an Mad Old Man is kept by 77-year-old Utsugi as he is recovering from an earlier stroke which left him impotent with countless ailments that the elderly experience. Impossibly, he does find a way to have a sex life. His daughter, Satsuko, just happens to be young and beautiful, and Utsugi begins to lust for her more and more. He even tries to live out his fantasy by allowing Satsuko to rendezvous with her lover in his house, concealing the affair from his own son. By allowing Utsugi certain liberties with her body, Satsuko begins to replace his own family. For example, his daughter asks for a loan so that she can buy a house and Utsugi refuses her. He turns around and buys Satsuko a ring worth millions of yen. What follows is a slow dance, almost a tango of give and take in which neither Utsugi or Satsuko is the villain of the piece. They seem to actually GAIN by the immoral situation. They both get what they want.
Diary was a really good novel but it wasn't a great one compared with previous novels by Tanizaki that I have read. Sometimes the narrative dwells on boring details, but once it gets moving it picks up some power. To me, one of the hardest modes to write in is first person but the author really keeps the diary interesting. While I don't know if I would compare the characterization to that of Shakespeare, there is something of his comedy and tragedy in Tanizaki. Also seek out The Key and Quicksand.

Aside of his novels, I have Richard Brautigan to thank for introducing me to Junichiro Tanizaki (he dedicated "Sombrero Fallout" to Tanizaki).
"Diary of a Mad Old Man" was the first book by him I read (figuring that it was very short, less than a hundred pages, and concluding that - even if it was terrible - it would not take me all that long to read).
It tells the story of Utsugi (the mad old man of the title) and his relationship with his son's neglected wife, a former dancing girl called Satsuko. Now, on the surface at least, it appears that Satsuko, tired of the neglect imposed by Utsugi's son, decides to torment (perhaps torment is too strong a word - perhaps I mean tease - perhaps I mean something halfway between teasing and torment) Utsugi, inviting him into her shower, letting him kiss her bare foot.
The thing is. That title. "Diary of a Mad Old Man." We are reading the old man's diary and the old man is mad. Or at least, that is what the title would have us presume. And yet, the old man (our narrator after all) does not SEEM mad. Yes, okay, he is consumed by lust, at times, for Satsuko (but what old man wouldn't be?), but madness? The title leads me to doubt what I read. I wonder at times if we are inhabiting the dream world of a certain old man. (It would certainly account for why Satsuko is hot and cold and hot and cold.)
Still. There is a cool sensuality to the writing and it is without doubt a good introduction to an old master.

An entertaining comedy about sex and old age

Diary of a Mad Old Man is one of the best of Tanizaki's later works. It takes up where earlier Tanizaki novels such as Naomi and Whirlpool left off. Like them, it is a book about absurd sexual obsessions, and like them it is subtle and intelligent and lacks the heavy-breathing solemnity of much modern literary porn. In the Diary, the narrator is an aging man who is apparently impotent yet who nurses a wildly extravagant set of sexual fantasies. His fantasies end up making a mess of his life--as the characters' fantasies always do in Tanizaki's books--and they give us a vision of geriatric sexuality that is almost unique in literature. As usual, Tanizaki is at his most insightful when he is also at his funniest, and the novel is full of the usual Tanizaki complexities that become both more interesting and more amusing the longer you think about them. Tanizaki called himself a feminist (though he is the least polemical of novelists), and his work remains by far the best examination of the way that male sexual obsessions wreck the lives of the men and women who become involved in them.

First, let’s get the basketball credentials out of the way. Russell was the greatest team basketball player ever; his Boston Celtics won championships in 11 of his 13 years.�Arnold Jacob “Red” Auerbach was the Celtics coach for the first 10 years of Russell’s career and later,�as the general manager, assembled five more championship teams after Russell retired. Russell retraces the path of their lifelong friendship as it evolved from player-coach to professional equals to good friends. The relationship was always grounded in respect. Auerbach never tried to alter Russell’s then-revolutionary basketball style, nor did he ever interfere with or critique Russell’s involvement in the civil-rights movement. Auerbach’s Jewish heritage exposed him to some of the same prejudices Russell experienced in segregated Boston, though they never compared notes. Auerbach cultivated a public persona associated with words like gruff or curmudgeon that are partially�accurate but woefully incomplete. He was extraordinarily intelligent, fearless, and sensitive to what would bring out the best in those around him. When Bill Russell joined the Boston Celtics in 1957 as the nation′s first prominent black basketball star, he was not expecting much from coach Red Auerbach. Despite two national college championships and an Olympic gold medal, Russell′s previous coaches-all whites-had barely spoken to him. Russell′s style was unorthodox, redefining the meaning of defense and offense, and many scouts dismissed him.

Yet Auerbach, the Jewish outsider in Irish Boston, immediately took to Russell, the African American from Louisiana and Oakland, and he was a coach like no other. Auerbach listened to his players, experimented freely, and knit together a team based only on results. Together they made sports history, winning 11 championships in 13 years. Along the way, Auerbach elevated Russell to player-coach, the first African-American coach in league history. Together, they battled prejudice both on and off the court, and created a team chemistry for the ages.

Even this glory is surpassed by another, little known aspect of their relationship: they became lifelong friends. As Russell explains, they were prepared for each other by their fathers, both strong men who loved their sons unconditionally. They both intuitively understood the dynamics of male friendship: there are many things left unsaid, but there is always understanding and respect. Over the many years since Russell retired from the Celtics and moved to the west coast, they saw each other rarely but spoke on the phone regularly. They were always there for each other. As Auerbach fell ill and declined, Russell was there, knowing how to reach out while respecting his former coach′s privacy. When Auerbach passed away in October, 2006, Russell refused to speak publicly about a relationship that was so deeply personal. Here, he offers a tribute greater than any speech.

About the Author

Five-time NBA MVP and twelve-time All-Star, Bill Russell was the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty that won eleven NBA championships. As a major league coach, Russell won two additional championships—the first African-American to do so. He is considered the father of the modern pro game and one of the most significant Americans of the twentieth century in sports. His three previous books include the national bestseller Russell Rules.

Alan Steinberg is the author of numerous books, including the New York Times bestseller Behind the Mask and Black Profiles in Courage with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Unique Relationship

I came across this book, while going through a basketball website, and since Bill Russell is regarded as the greatest winner in team sports, and Red Auerbach is considered the greatest coach that's ever lived, I figured there is no better place to learn about them, than from Russell himself.

Russell shares stories of his childhood, and how it helps him in high school, college, and how it sets the foundation for his relationship with Red Auerbach. You could tell they had a sincere bond, and had a unique way of interacting with each other. They both realized what they had with each other, and were able to work toward one common goal: winning. It was one of the more encouraging examples of success, especially with what we see nowadays, with teams and some of the riff-raff that goes on, that has little-or-nothing to do with winning.

It also gives you a glimpse of a side of both of them that people were not accustomed to seeing, at least from what I've seen. We get to see Coach Red as someone who would play practical jokes, and even had some played on him as well. More than anything, Mr. Russell does a great job of exposing the man, and letting the reader know he was fiercely loyal, dedicated to success, and was someone whose mind was working 24/7, and all for the betterment of the team. More than anything else, it's the story of how two men came together, and became very good friends, while forming a bond that could never be compromised and broken.

I must state for the record that I am not a Boston Celtic fan... but the fact that I openly admired their "team-first" play... and even though I was saddened for decades as they always beat my Lakers in the finals... as a basketball player myself... I was true to the heart of the sport... when I openly said they were the better team. The Celtics of the late 50's and 60's were *THE-GREATEST-DYNASTY-IN-THE-HISTORY-OF-ALL-PROFESSIONAL-SPORTS!* Winning *EIGHT-STRAIGHT-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS*... and winning *ELEVEN-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS-IN-THIRTEEN-YEARS*! This is a mark that has never been matched... and with the lunacy of free agency... probably never will. At the core of these storied championships were two men. The architect... a small fiery Jew from Brooklyn... the coach and general manager... Red Auerbach... and the winningest player in professional sports history... and Celtic center... Bill Russell. This is not to say there weren't other great players on these Celtic teams... of course there were. The Hall of Fame's walls are lined with many of their plaques... in addition to numerous other Celtic legends as well. Just to name a few: "Da Cooz"... Heinsohn... the Jones boys... Sharman... Sanders... Havlicek... Howell... Loscutoff... and many others. But the most valuable of all these... was center Bill ("Russ") Russell. Russ's unmatched record as the ultimate winner included back-to-back NCAA Championships with USF and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1956 before joining the Celtics.

Most of these accolades are known by most Celtic fans and also by true sports fans. But what hasn't been known... until this book... because Russ never let anyone into his heart before... to share his intimate feelings... is how deep the reciprocal friendship... and yes the actual love was... between Russ and Red. The reason these feelings were never laid out in the open like this... is pretty obvious to Russ... and he'll hit you over the head with the reason innumerous times in this book. He and Red... like many of the other men of his time... didn't hug each other... or say I love you.

The Celtics became the first team in any professional sport to start an all black team. Asked about it they acted like they hadn't noticed... it was simply a case of putting the best team on the floor. When Red retired from coaching... he named Russ the new Celtic coach. Russell was the first black head coach or manager in professional sports history. Red and Russ never mentioned a thing. When the media asked Red about the significance of having the first "Negro" coach Red said: "LOOK, IT'S NO BIG DEAL. I JUST DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS BEST FOR OUR TEAM."

The powerful impact of this book is that feelings and wisdom is being shared by a legendary sports figure who for decades and decades had kept any emotions... other than complaining about a foul call... locked in a personal vault that many thought even Russell didn't have the combination to. But when his *FRIEND* Red Auerbach died on October 28, 2006... the big man decided to share some of his personal beliefs and feelings.

There are some powerful and beautiful sentiments shared with the reader such as:

"IT IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAN TO BE UNDERSTOOD."

"FRIENDSHIP DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU GIVE TO EACH OTHER, NOT WHAT YOU GET FROM EACH OTHER."

"BUT WE BOTH UNDERSTOOD THAT IF I SUCCEEDED, IT ENHANCED HIM, AND IF HE SUCCEEDED, IT ENHANCED ME. ULTIMATELY, OUR REAL SUCCESS WAS OUR ABILITY-WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO EXPRESS IT OPENLY-TO COLLABORATE IN EVERY WAY WE COULD THINK OF, TO HELP THE *TEAM* SUCCEED."

Any Bill Russell fan will be utterly surprised at the side of Russell that he allows the world to see in this book. One quote that has already affected me is:

"MY AMBITION AS YOUR FRIEND IS THAT MY FRIENDSHIP HAS A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. IF AM ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THAT, IT WILL ENHANCE MY QUALITY OF LIFE."

Mutual Respect

The secret to the unique friendship between Arnold "Red" Auerbach and Bill Russell has to be the mutual respect each had for the other. Red was the first coach Russell ever had who let him be himself. Rather than impose his own will on him Auerbach was smart enough and secure in his own position to allow Russell to "do his thing" on the basketball floor. Auerbach did admit to having two sets of rules, one for Russell and one for the remaining members of the team. Russell, to his credit, didn't take advantage of the situation. Both Auerbach and Russell were upfront with each other in their relationship and each respected and didn't question the others' beliefs in matters not related to basketball. An interesting anecdote is how Russell came to be drafted by the Celtics. Yes, it has been told in other books, but the Celtics had to do some maneuvering to get the chance to draft Bill Russell. I'm sure Russell would have been successful even if he didn't have Arnold "Red" Auerbach for a coach, but fortunately this odd-couple were a perfect match for one another. This book is a quick read, but it does contain lessons that will interest future coaches on any level in addition to anyone who is interested in reading about human relationships.

Sigvald the Magnificent!!

Darius Hink's Sigvald is simply a fresh and fantastic fantasy novel.

Sigvald is not your typical fantasy novel, nor a very typical Warhammer type novel. It truly stands on its own, and I hope there is a sequel. The beautiful cover artwork is becoming a solid signature in these fantasy Warhammer series. (Grabbed my attention!)

I went into this book with hopeful, positive intentions, because a lot of sci-fi and fantasy Warhammer books I personally find hard to get into sometimes, although I've tried numerous ones through the years. Like Sigvald, a true gem is sometimes found. Well written, well edited, and containing not only tons of great action one expects in Warhammer novels, but also fantastic storytelling with excellent and different characters.

Sigvald the Magnificent is not by any means your typical hero - or anti-hero for that matter. His total insanity is contagious, and is never a dull read. He surrounds himself with different types of men and creatures that are both horrific and insanely strange that I had to keep turning pages to find out more about them.

A must read for Warhammer fans, and just fans of solid fantasy reading - period!

Sigvald was a good read and left me wanting more! Know a book is pretty good when I'm sad at finishing it, was just getting used to the characters. This is the funniest Warhammer book that I've read and compares favorably to the others about Malus Darkblade (the best I've read so far) and Anthony Reynolds WH40K novels. Loved it!

I've never written a review for a book before, however this addition to the Warhammer universe was so outstanding, I felt obligated to praise the author for his work. I realize the book was published 2 years ago and I'm a bit late to the party, however, for those who are new to the Warhammer collection or for those that have passed over this offering... read this novel.

Mr. Hinks captures the essence of the Dark God Slaanesh and its followers with style and an impeccable attention to detail. It's obvious that he took great care to hold the story in-line with Warhammer canon. The mannerisms and personality he breathes into Sigvald does the champion of chaos great justice. The other plot lines are engaging, fast-paced and perfectly woven together to a fantastic culmination.

This was the first book I've read by Darius Hinks and I must now read the rest.

Musicians and artists might need talent to succeed, but writers don't, says Jerry Cleaver in Immediate Fiction. Cleaver allows that talent is needed to win a National Book Award, say, but otherwise, any of us can do it. All we need is the ability to "develop and exercise sadistic license." The operative word is conflict. As Cleaver puts it, "Happy lives make lousy novels.... If the characters are having a good time, the reader is not." He takes the mystery out of fiction writing. You don't have to write about what you know, he says; write what you can imagine. Don't fret if you can't find large chunks of time to write. Start with five minutes on weekdays and 20 on weekends, and you'll have 100 to 300 pages by year's end. Perhaps most refreshing about Cleaver's approach is the lack of directives. I spent years trying to perfect my writing process

After reading Immediate Fiction, I regretted all the years I spent on courses, researching, reading other writing books. All I needed was Jerry Cleaver's masterpiece. Although nothing in the book was a surprise to me, he simplified my writing process and boiled it down to what was really important to writing a interesting story. I spent years trying to perfect my writing process, including focusing a lot of time on character profiling, building an Excel spreadsheet with all possibly character traits. Along comes Jerry's book and I'm changing my process to be more in line with his advice and recommendations. He did what so many other writers do not do - provided clear and concise examples on "how." Other writing books tell you what to do but never give you guidance on how, so you don't know whether you've succeeded. I was saddened to read Mr. Cleaver passed in 2014, but his book is one I will not donate or throw away. It will be on my bookshelf for as long as I write. If I could give it 100 stars, I would.

Perfect book for pantsers, for plotters maybe not

Let me begin my review of this book by saying that this is a fine book on the craft of writing, with many good points, but it is FAR from being complete, as it claims it is on the cover. As I alluded to in the title of this review if you like to write and see where your writing takes you ( a pantser) this book will give you the tools that shape the story form ( conflict, action and resolution ) and expands upon them during the course of the book but if you like to plan out and plot your novel and know where the story is going ( a plotter ) this book is probably not for you. When I initially finished reading this book I was frustrated but in hindsight I was frustrated because it wasn't structured enough for me, it just didn't fit my temperament and not because it isn't a good book. If you are a pantser this is the perfect book for you and you will get great use out of it but if like me you are a plotter, I suggest you read How to Fix Your Novel by Steve Alcorn it shows you everything you need to know about the writing process such as discovering what you want to write about, three dimensional character creation,story structure, handling dialogue, submitting a manuscript for publication much more. Mr Alcorn has a writing website which has many writing courses in addition to the aforementioned book and I won't list it here you will find it easily if you google it. In conclusion Immediate fiction is a good read and will inspire you to begin writing, but fails in my opinion to give you the additional tools to use that inspiration to create a finished novel.

The book I've been looking for for 15 years.

This is the book I've been looking for for 15 years. Well worth waiting for. I've had a desire to write stories for a long time, but have been - like the author himself was - flummoxed by not having a clear understanding of the essential essence of story creating. So I've read MANY books to try to get myself going. As others have commented, they've all added something useful, but this is THE ONE - WITHOUT A DOUBT - that has already transformed my relationship to the blank page and to my ideas. It's given me a REAL understanding of what I need to do, and how to do it, and confidence that I CAN do this, to go with it. Now the only thing that's stopping me is the usual fear, which I will get over. NOT a lack of understanding of what the hell to do with everything inside of me and how to translate that into story. THIS BOOK IS THE ONE. The author wrote this book because he himself had been looking for just such a book his whole writing life. He'd read dozens of books, none of which made the process - the 1-2-3, the goal, the essence, the how - crystal clear to him. One day, he finally met a teacher that unlocked the door and delivered it. It's a one of a kind. And I'm very grateful. If only I'd had this 10 years ago, I'd have a LOT more stories right now. If you want to write stories - get this book.

Found several big mistakes. Eastern Europe and the rest of nonwestern world is under represented. Great Schism of the Church overlooked...
One of the bigger mistakes-Serbia listed as central power allie of Austro-Hungary and Germany! Byzantine empire geographical description fails to mention Balkans as it integral part even if map clearly shows it.

A nice, highly illustrated, children's encyclopedia

Note - this is a review of a 2009 edition of what I believe is the same book. The author, Anita Ganeri, is the same as are the number of pages and the cover is similar, but the book is smaller, only 4.5x6 inches. I believe that this is a small size edition, republished by Parragon, but I am not absolutely sure that this this the case.

The text of the book is written in a straightforward manner and in my opinion at middle school level or above, but no reader should feel "talked down to", regardless of they level of historical background, it is just that the more complex nuances have been dispensed with in favor of a more direct approach. In addition to the over 1000 illustrations included in the book there is a timeline at the bottom of each page that summarizes the topic being covered. These topics (there are over 100 of them) cover more than just European history - they also include that of South America, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Asia. There is also a master timeline at the back of the book that summarizes the events occurring concurrently all over the world.

I bought copies of this book for my grandchildren (they were almost being given away as remainders). The small size of the book and the print is a problem for me, but should not be for them. (I have yet to give the books to them as they are still too young.) Children, and I suspect many adults, will find it a nice summary, although a bit of a superficial one.
