Cute gift

I got this for my wife as a gift on Valentine's Day (though not all she got). It was very cute and she enjoyed it even more than I expected. I guess it's basically formatted like a children's book, but cute. It begins with "Me without you is like...", the next page is "... sky without blue", and then every following page has some other little rhyming comparison, such as "hair without do", "ghost without boo", "kung without fu", etc., and just keeps going on and on like that for every page, each with a little illustration.

I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentines day. Its really long and my favorite references were the Doctor Who ones and the Harry Potter ones! Its just a really cute and simple way to say when we're not together I'm not complete!

I thought I might lose interest in a departure from the character driven aspect of the first two books but I was happily surprised. Unlike some fantasy stories where the military campaigns are just pages of action and violence, the author does an excellent job of combining the action that other stories have, but he also adds strategy, twists and turns, and manages to continue the character development of the first two books. I wonder how many more books are to come and hope for a least a couple more as I am enjoying this more than a lot of other series I have read lately. I hope that the characters maintain their likability and that the good guys win in the end. In the Spring of 1987 I woke one morning from the most vivid dream I ever experienced. I lie in bed basking in the pleasure of it. The sense was very much like the feeling you experience after watching a particularly excellent movie. You sit in your theater seat as the credits roll, lost in the story, letting emotions continue to wash across your consciousness.
� � �That morning was the genesis of�The Seraphinium. What I experienced was a full blown movie in my head. As I "watched" that movie, the story was complete. Characters were set. Background for those characters was known. When a scene played out, I never asked "Who is that guy?" It was as if I already knew. I had been briefed.�� � �The story wasn't simple. On the contrary, it was quite complex. A world acted as its canvas and an entire population as its cast of characters. The story encompassed years and dealt with the future of entire races.�� � �I sat up and went to my desk. I wrote. Hasty notes at first, scribbled all across a yellow legal pad. The notes turned into an outline and the outline was stapled to crude drawings of maps and creatures.�� � �For the next decade and a half I would periodically breakout the notebook. It grew. After a few years it turned into a box crammed with poems, prose, drawings, photos, maps and outlines. The box became a blessing. I truly enjoyed cracking it open and touching base with the ideas that had grown so familiar to me. I knew the story in both depth and detail within my head, but looking at it on paper was always a treat.�� � � However, �the box also became my albatross. I took it with me when I moved, always stuffing it in some dark closet. It represented something undone. It made me feel as if I'd left a part of my life incomplete. The Book, as I began to call it, needed to be written.� � �In 2004, my wife Jennifer gave me two gifts for Christmas. I unwrapped the first, a laptop computer. I was puzzled. I didn't need or ask for a laptop. The second was a colorfully wrapped, large box. I opened it and was even more confused. Before me lie The Box, retrieved from its dark recess.�� � �"Take all of this," said Jennifer as she pointed at The Box, "and put it in that."�� � �She pointed at the computer.�� � �So for 7 years I have been putting "this" into "that". The result is�The Seraphinium Series.�

more great storytelling

This is another great installment in a highly enjoyable series. A lot of time is spent on military preparatiions and diplomacy, but the pace never seems to slow down. After reading the first two books, I felt like I knew the characters, but even though they sometimes act in frustrating or surprising ways in this book, they remain totally believable. The good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, but they're all flawed and all have their own agendas. This, combined with top notch fantasy, makes for a really fun and intersting read.

Eagerly awaiting book 4

Books 1 through 3 of the Seraphinium series ended much too soon. The characters are interesting and consistent. The plot twists are legion. A writing style reminiscent of Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings.

As a former editor I was elated to find the books seem to be professionally edited with hardly any sentences I would question or change.

I've asked to be on Daniel McHugh's mailing list so I can keep reading.

Known for his excellence in teaching, Dr. Robert J. Carbaugh is Professor of Economics at Central Washington University. He has been honored with numerous top teaching awards, including the 1984 Excellence in Teaching award at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, and the Distinguished Professor of the University--Teaching award at Central Washington University in 1993. In 1996, Dr. Carbaugh was named Scholar of the Year by the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society at Central Washington University. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Professor of the University award for Research at Central Washington University. In 2004, Dr. Carbaugh was invited by the Directors of the Oxford Round Table to present a lecture, "Trade and Environmental Frictions in the Global Steel Industry," at Oxford University in England. For more than 40 years, Dr. Carbaugh has taught international economics, as well as managerial economics, money and banking, and both introductory and intermediate levels of microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Well Written!

This is an excellent guide for teaching students the basic structure of the language. The acquisition is perfect for students in college. Specifically, the presentation is geared toward developing writing skills to critique high quality literature in the English Composition and Literature courses, as well as writing across the curriculum.

Excellent book

I taught the upper-level developmental writing courses, and this is one of my favorite books. The instruction is lively, clear, and concise--yet jam packed with information. So many students struggle with writing introductions, conclusions, and thesis statements. Unlike most books that jam all three topics into one chapter, this book breaks it down into three separate chapters with very clear, interesting examples and exercises to help you develop the skills and the craft of writing.

I often advised my students to hold on to this book when they leave my class and move on to Comp 1 and 2; the lessons here will them through to the more advanced courses. When I tutored comp 1 students in the lab, I'd introduce them to this book and told them, "If you don't understand a concept in your current book, turn to the appropriate topic in this book and work on those exercises.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I didn't like the grammar section all that much.

About the Author

Linda Dunlap is a professor of psychology. She has taught psychology and education courses since receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1980. She served as a part-time faculty member at State University of New York at New Paltz, Dutchess Community College, and Ulster Community College in New York from 1980 to 1984. Since 1984, she has served as a full-time faculty member and chair of the psychology department (1984-2005) at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In addition, she served as a child development specialist for the Saint Francis Hospital Preschool Program in Poughkeepsie from 1986 to 1994. This program provides services for children 2 to 5 years old who have developmental delays. Dr. Dunlap served as a board member and executive officer for the Dutchess County Child Development Council. She frequently contributes to articles in national newspapers and magazine focusing on child development, teacher education, and parenting issues. She has also served as a consultant for local school districts. In addition, she has written two other textbooks, What All Children Need and Theory and Application,(University Press, 2nd ed. 2005)and Psychological Testing Across the Lifespan. (Prentice Hall, 2008).

Not professionally written

Unfortunetly, if you are like me usually you have no choice as to the text that you must buy for your university studies. However, if you are a professor browsing text on the subject of Spec. Ed., don't make the dire mistake of choosing this one. So far, information has been blatantly incorrect. In addition, the style of writting is unclear and has many run-on sentences. Also, it is not organized in a coherent way.

Well thought out, and informative

I am a nurse working in early intervention. This is a great resource book for the provider working with children with disabilities and developmental delays. I like the way she talks about all subjects from Autism, to hearing loss,to motor delays, to fetal alcohol syndrome, to speech and language delays, and to the importance of play. She talks about occupational therapists and how they can adapt equipment to help modify the problem: whether it be eating, motor or cognitive. She gives overviews of Spina Bifida, amputations, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and visual impairments. If you are out in the trenches working with the children, you realize how valuable this book really is. I don't think as a student sitting in a classroom you can appreciate it.

Great book! A must have for providers working with children with disabilities.

WHY BE A PRODUCER?

Why not be a producer? Would you rather sell shoes for a living? Or be an accountant? Both are honorable occupations, but wouldn’t you like to wake up eager to go to work, use every part of yourself while at work, and maybe, just maybe, have a tiny impact on the world? That’s why I’m doing it.

We all like movies. Heck, that’s why you bought this book. We’re all critics, too; we know what is a good movie, and we know what isn’t. A lot of times we even think we know why. I know I do. Indeed, I felt that way long before I got into the movie business. So, how about a job where you’re the one who decides what movie to make, and how it should be made? A producer. That sounded exciting to me a long time ago, and it still does. What’s more, producing is that rare profession where you can start at the top—if you control a super, terrific, dynamite script.

There are many levels and categories of producing: line producers, executive producers, co-producers, associate producers, assistant producers. Line producers are physical production specialists. Executive producers get their credits for anything from arranging the money, to controlling the property, to being manager of the star or director, to being the studio executive overseeing the film. The associate producer title is a catchall, bestowed upon anyone the producer deems worthy. But the real deal is the producer. He or she runs the show. It’s the producer, and only the producer, who accepts the Academy Award for best picture.

I actually feel the same today as I did in 1967, when I was interviewed by a young kid writing for the now-defunct Cinema magazine. That young kid was Curtis Hanson, who has since entered the top echelon of writer-directors with an Academy Award best-screenplay win, plus best-director and best-picture nominations, for L.A. Confidential (after having directed The River Wild for me). When Hanson questioned why I chose to go into filmmaking, I replied: “Nothing could be more rewarding or stimulating. I think everyone in the business feels the same way. If every salary were cut in half, not one person would leave. I chose producing because it would coalesce both my background experience and modicum of ability in business with what I immodestly and laughingly thought of as my good taste and judgment. Boy, what fun to decide whether a picture should be made, to decide or influence a decision that something should be done this way instead of that way, and to see if I can get this artistic quality here within the framework of that kind of budget money there. Each day has new challenges, new battles, new struggles, new frustrations, new satisfactions. Each day as I wake up I figure I’ll walk into the office and get hit with a right to the heart and a left to the kidney, but I love it. It’s uphill all the way because it’s so competitive and ephemeral and frustrating. There are many frustrations within the framework, but the satisfactions are just enormous. Even the complainers love it.”

That’s exactly how I feel about most of the films I’ve produced. I’m the “starter” and also the “finisher,” and am therefore involved in every aspect and most details of production. It may begin with an original idea of mine (Caveman), a book (The Graduate, The Flim-Flam Man), a play (Mass Appeal, The Best Man), reading a play prior to its production (The Great White Hope, Tribute), an original screenplay (Full Moon on Blue Water, Second Thoughts), or an idea a writer brings to me (Running Scared). In all cases, I arrange for the financing, without which a project can’t get off the ground. I work closely with the writer structuring and detailing the story. I select the director and, with him or her, select the actors and consult about the look and style of the picture, as well as the actual production of the film, including hiring the crew, editing, selecting the composer, and discussing what kind of music is to be used and where it should be placed in the film. I am also involved in the ad campaign and the overall marketing and distribution strategies. As producer, I am the editor and sounding board for all the other creative talents, hopefully enhancing their work and coalescing all into a unified whole.

As a producer, you use every part of yourself. It’s always challenging; you’re never bored. It’s creative, it’s working with interesting, diverse people, exercising your taste, your judgment. You also get to meet and know unusual, accomplished people—in my case, everyone from Wernher von Braun, father of the space program, to Noel Coward, to Henry Kissinger. The job involves travel to unusual places, for me from the Kentucky Derby to the car races in Le Mans. Each movie project becomes a journey of discovery. Each has different types of characters; each is in a different setting or environment; each deals with things you haven’t seen or heard before—you’re learning and growing all the time. And each movie involves a new, different set of collaborators—all worldly, creative, and stimulating—and many will become lifelong friends.

I am a person who wants to discover and learn, and that sort of drives me. . . . What could be more gratifying? Very little, I think. And I’ve just been talking about the icing on the cake. The cake for me is my personal expression. The idea or theme behind each film I choose to do is my conscious or, sometimes, unconscious signature, through which I express my values to my peers and to the world. I like to think—I do think—that I can affect the world, or at least a few people in it. My concerns, my themes, seem to be consistent. American History X, a film I executive produced, made audiences confront how destructive hate can be. It’s the story of an American racist neo-Nazi skinhead who ultimately rejects that way of life, but whose own brother is murdered as a consequence of his actions. The Great White Hope, which I produced thirty years earlier, was also about racism. It was the story of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson, who, by merely holding the title of world’s best, inflamed not only the white boxing establishment but many people throughout America. When Muhammed Ali visited the set, he told me, “That’s my story!”

The idea of getting to sit in a room with a cup of coffee and talk about a story for a few hours is really one of the privileges and pleasures. There’s nothing more fun than talking about some movie like Memoirs of a Geisha, and you sit around with some really smart writer, and you’re talking about how some woman might behave in 1920s Kyoto. And then, literally a half-hour later, you’re talking about Custer and how he changed American history. I just love a day that takes you from ancient Rome to the Old West. —Doug Wick (Academy Award winner for Gladiator)

Even the seemingly “guns and giggles” Running Scared (Billy Crystal’s first screen role), which I co-produced, had a serious underlying theme: two cops (Gregory Hines is the other) who are near retirement decide to play it “safe” and avoid getting hurt by not tempting danger. Except all hell breaks loose and they succeed by reverting to their true natures, by not “running scared.” The moral? You’ve got to try your hardest all the time, whether you’re a cop, athlete, or producer.

The Best Man, based on Gore Vidal’s play and which I co-produced, is a political movie about compromises, backroom deals, distortions of the truth, the power of the press, and the glare of public life, all of which are as pertinent today—if not more so—than decades ago when we made the film. Those themes are pieces of myself. I’d like the titles of those films, plus others I’ve produced, engraved on my tombstone. (Well, there are a couple I’d like excised.)

Is there anything more exhilarating than completing a film that began life as an idea in your head and then sitting in a crowded movie theater, hearing the audience laugh, or hold its collective breath, seeing tears flow, and perhaps hearing some applause? For me, no—unless it’s seeing my sons grow and flourish. But they also began life as an idea in my head.

Is it a roller-coaster ride? For sure. One reason to be a producer is that it’s a damn exciting life. I guarantee you’ll never be bored. But you’ll also never be relaxed. As the great baseball player Satchel Paige said, “Don’t look back. Someone might be gaining on you.” It’s not that it’s a competition with your fellow producers. There are just so few movie slots at each studio, and so many—too damn many—producers chasing them. That’s why you have to be creative. And isn’t using your creativity in trying to make movies, and then actually making them, the biggest reward? I think so. You’re constantly using your imagination, your ingenuity, and your brain power. Each day at work you’ll be living to the fullest. So why not play the game, where you decide what movie to try to make, and sometimes get it made? What beats that? Maybe scoring the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl . . . but even that takes less creativity than producing movies.

If your imagination is fired about becoming a producer, I say go for it. Or go for whatever your dream is because if you don’t, you’ll live to regret it. “I shoulda; I coulda,” are words you do not want to even think, much less utter, five or ten years down the road. My favorite line in all of musical literature was written by Oscar Hammerstein, in Carousel: “I let my golden chances pass me by.” Or, as the poem by Whittier says, “Of all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these, it might have been.” However, if someone—family or a friend, perhaps—can talk you out of it, beware . . . you probably won’t make it. It is tough and it is competitive. If you’re not prepared to give 100 percent, just about all the time—and I mean more than an eight- or nine-hour workday—forget about it. But if you are, if you do, I guarantee it’s worth it.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. If you want to know the basics of producing, this is a great way to get started. Fantastic read. I had to buy it for a film school producing class and honestly wish I had bought this book and not taken the class.

Great Book for New or Experienced Producers

Whether you are an aspiring or experienced producer, this is the book for you. The author packs a lot of information into the 250+ pages. The book is part "motivational," part "how-to," and part "memoir." It all sums up to one of the best and most entertaining producing books I've ever run across. I particular like the author's suggestion that you can maintain your morals and ethics and still be successful in the movie business.

This book was great for being in the shoes of a producer. I wouldn't buy this book for tips on HOW to be a producer because you simply won't find any. That said, I enjoyed the book as a means to understand if I would want to subject myself to a producer's lifestyle. Lots of work, little recognition, ego management, gambling for a paycheck. I would recommend this book to anyone considering a career in producing.

About the Author
Janet Brennan Croft is Head of Access and Delivery Services and Faculty of Research and Instructional Services at the Rutgers University libraries. She is the author of War in the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien (Praeger, 2004; winner, Mythopoeic Society Award for Inklings Studies) and has written on the Peter Jackson films, J. K. Rowling, Terry Pratchett, Lois McMaster Bujold, and other authors. She is the editor or co-editor of four collections of literary essays. She also edits the refereed scholarly journal Mythlore and serves on the Mythopoeic Press Editorial Board. Leslie A. Donovan is a Professor in the Honors College at the University of New Mexico, where she teaches interdisciplinary humanities courses for undergraduates. Among her publications are studies of valkyries in The Lord of the Rings (included in this collection), Tolkien’s mythology, women saints’ lives in Old English prose, the character of Hunferth in Beowulf, and various pedagogical topics. She has edited Approaches to Teaching Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Other Works forthcoming from the Modern Language Association. In addition, she is the Editor of the Mythopoeic Press.

Impressive research, thinking, writing

From its beautifully illustrated cover worthy of the book's title to the index at the end, Perilous and Fair is a scholarly and comprehensive investigation of the beloved author's views on women and portrayal of them in his literature. The fourteen articles reach deep into the subject and include the Tolkien scholars' opinions as well as their research. Rich information here, including (new for me) the concept of "fanfiction."

Unrecognized Depths:Tolkien's Views Of Women In Middle-earth

In J.R.R. Tolkien's books women play an important, though limited, role. There are no female characters at all in The Hobbit (actually causing Peter Jackson to create one for his movie version), and while there are a number of important women in The Lord of the Rings, the characters who are present in every chapter are all male. This has led some critics to label Tolkien misogynistic or merely schoolboyish. This collection of essays does much to demonstrate that women's roles in Middle-earth, as well as Tolkien's own attitudes towards females, are much more varied and complex than popular belief would have it.

The 14 essays are divided into five groups: Historical Perspectives, Power of Gender, Specific Characters, Earlier Literary Contexts, and Women Readers. As a former history teacher myself I most enjoyed two of the essays in the first section: John D. Rateliff's "The Missing Women," which challenges the conception that Tolkien spent his life in masculine society by detailing the women with whom he had family, social, and professional connections and by emphasizing his strong, and at the time unusual, support for women's higher education; and also Sharin Schroeder's "She Who Must Not Be Ignored," which examines gender and genre in both The Lord of the Rings and in such Victorian "boy's books" as H.R. Haggard's "She," which Tolkien is known to have read and enjoyed. I also liked "Power in Arda," by Edith L.Crowe and "The Fall and Repentence of Galadriel" by Romuald I. Lakowski in the second and third sections for their insights into Tolkien's ever changing conceptions about his sub-creation. And again because of my background in history I really liked Melissa A. Smith's "At Home And Abroad," on Eowyn as a war bride! The fourth section's "The Valkyrie Reflex" by Leslie A. Donovan makes some fascinating analyses of Galadriel, Eowyn, Arwen, and (!) Shelob while Maureen Dunn's "Hidden in Plain View" makes some fascinating comparisons between Shakespeare and Tolkien's female characters. The fifth section has one essay, Una McCormack's "Finding Ourselves in the "(Un)Mapped Lands," which describes some intriguing fanfictions on some of Tolkien's lesser known female characters like Ioreth and Lothiriel (as well as some Middle-earth women created by the fanfiction writers themselves).

As with any good collection of critical essays readers will find much with which to agree and disagree, but every selection is well worth reading. Most importantly, readers' appreciation for J.R.R. Tolkien's work will be enhanced by the insights and conclusions to be found within Perilous And Fair.

As one wanting to write on feminism and Tolkien, this book is indispensable. The articles in it are varied across subjects in relation to feminism and Tolkien, across time of Tolkien scholarship. What really helped me too was the bibliographic essay at the beginning because it gave me titles of other essays not covered in this work to start digging for as well! The editor did a fantastic job with this and my most recent paper would not have been as great without it. I look forward to using its resources in the future!

To date, the scope of such questions have been limited – focused upon specific technologies such as the internet, or bio-technology with little sense of any social or historical continuities in the way technology in general has been regulated.

In this book, for the first time, the 'question of technology' and its relation to criminal justice is approached as a whole. Technology, Crime and Justice analyzes a range of technologies, (including information, communications, nuclear, biological, transport and weapons technologies, amongst many others) in order to pose three interrelated questions about their affects upon criminal justice and criminal opportunity:

    • to what extent can they really be said to provide new criminal opportunity or to enhance existing ones?
    • what are the key characteristics of the ways in which such technologies have been regulated?
    • how does technology itself serve as a regulatory force – both in crime control and social control more widely?

Technology, Crime and Justice considers the implications of contemporary technology for the practice of criminal justice and relates them to key historical precedents in the way technology has been interpreted and controlled. It outlines a new ‘social’ way of thinking about technology – in terms of its affects upon our bodies and what they can do, most obviously the ways in which social life and our ability to causally interact with the world is ‘extended’ in various ways. It poses the question – could anything like a ‘Technomia’ of technology be identified – a recognizable set of principles and sanctions which govern the way that it is produced and used, principles also consistent with our sense of justice?

This book provides a key resource for students and scholars of both criminology and technology studies.
