No ending??

I liked the book. It was interesting and I was caught up in the story well enough. The fact that there was no ending brings my rating to a two star. It would be much better if the authors would not set the book up as needing a sequel and then never delivering one...

A Promise Kept Leads to Adventure

"Would you make me a promise," a young boy asks the sea captain, "If ever I should become like me father, will you dunk me under the water until I cannot breathe." However, ten years later the boy is Thomas, a petty thief and drunk. That promise is but a faded childhood memory when he, and his vagrant friend Farrell, are shanghaied onto a ship.

Set around the time of the Revolutionary War, the dialogue is written in the dialect of the time and includes much of the jargon of the sea. In some novels, this can get in the way of the story, but here the author does a nice balance of modern English, dialect and jargon.

Thomas and Farrell are both multi-faceted characters with some good and, at the start of the story, many bad qualities. Farrell quickly adjusts to the sea, but Thomas resists. The slow evolution of his character is the focus of the novel. The other characters are well defined, but less explored. Perhaps in a sequel we will see more of them.

Joyce Scott is a Christian and her faith is reflected in a couple of the characters in the story. However, while her faith is lightly sprinkled throughout the novel, it remains an adventure story, with a just a hint of romance.

For full disclosure, I should mention that Joyce is a friend and I read and critiqued parts of the manuscript. However, when she announced the publication I eagerly bought and read the novel. I would not have reviewed the story if I had not enjoyed it. The ending clearly sets up for a sequel which I have not seen but look forward to reading.

1 exciting day reading get away for me

I was lucky enough to read the review of your book in the Centralia Chronicle several months ago. Much to my surprise, I met your husband at the doctor's office and he noticed I was reading the Kindle. He asked how I liked it and I informed him I had over 450 books already in my library. He told me about your book and I was so excited to read it, that I ordered it while he was at his appointment. I was already reading chapter 5 when he came out, by the end of the day I had completed the book, by using the audio while I was canning. You have a great talent to make the characters come to life and a passion to keep the book moving rapidly through the pages. I hope to see (and hear) more of you and your books in the future. Great job Joyce!!!! From a fellow Lewis County reader.

After buying a new game at a pawn shop Derrick ran home to play it though as soon as he turned it on his life came to an abrupt end. Transported into another world Derrick found himself in a world not unlike an rpg. Felling no loss at the world he left behind he started to move in his new world as his guides helped him.

Decent work in progress, Horribly overpriced.

I have a simple policy when deciding whether to buy an e-book. 1. Am I pulled in within the first page? 2. Is it priced close to $.01-$.02 per page?

I am happy to pay 1.99, or even 2.99 for an e-book, if I am getting a decent amount for my money. 2.99 for 180 pages is the highest ratio I've ever gone, and that was because the book sample was just too good to put down. 2.99 for 90 pages? No. That's ridiculous for even the best e-book, and the sample was not that good. Worst, the author attempted to justify this in the foreword, claiming these 90 pages took 80 hours to write, and that it was the only way for them to be reimbursed a decent amount. I felt dirty just reading those words. I will not be buying any of this authors works until they learn to price them accordingly.

To finish. The book looks like a decent work in progress. It is insanely overpriced. The author is horribly conceited, and not interested in the people who might be reading their works. Do not support this author unless you enjoy being taken advantage of.

Promising LitRPG serial

Nice and welcomed addition to the genre. I found the idea of an update every 15 days quite attractive as well. It certainly works well for Star Force: Inception (SF1) . The universe seems well built, and can only get richer the more books we see. The set up is a mix of the standards transport-into-a-new-world and reincarnation, while the setting is a universe/world that works on game mechanics, which I always enjoy. In this nascent genre, English speaking writers are still playing catch up, but we are slowly reaching a critical mass, and I can see more and more books coming out soon. This was a good beginning, although not as polished as the Russian litRPG out there, it compares well with many of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean I've read. It's still only a first book, so there's a lot to be written before we can make a call, but I'll got out on a limb an say this is probably the beginning of a great series.

Good book marred by excessive typos

I really enjoyed the stories, and the writing wasn't bad, except for the massively excessive number of typos. If you are going to charge this much for a book this short, and go so far as to include a justification for the price ( which I can understand if Amazon has a pricing plan that's tiered the way that's described), then either spend a bit more time and proofread what you write, find an editor, or find yourself a small group of "first readers" that can help you weed out most of those. The work REALLY suffers because of them.

Professor Kay-Tee Khaw trained in medicine at Girton College, Cambridge and then at St. Mary's Hospital London where she had the transforming experience of being taught clinical medicine and epidemiology by Geoffrey Rose. She was one of the students on the first year of the Masters in Epidemiology course that Geoffrey Rose started in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and his ideas have continued to inspire her through many international clinical and academic posts. She is a principal investigator in EPIC, a prospective population study on diet, cancer, and chronic disease, which involves 500,000 participants from ten European Countries which aims to identify nutritional, hormonal and other factors which determine good health. She also co-ordinates an annual World Heart Federation/World Health Organisation International Teaching Seminar, originated by Geoffrey Rose.

A solid book on the Linux operating system!

A solid book on the Linux operating system!

In General:
“Linux with Operating System Concepts” by Richard Fox is a very informative book on the Linux operating system, that is well written with significant explanation, describing key usage and system administration issues, and is practically applicable for a broad audience, including: students, instructors, system administrators, computer engineers and hobbyists.

I feel that employees in academic institutions and businesses that use the Linux operating system would benefit from reading this text, since it covers machine setup and goes into depth with regard to details of computer operating system usage. It’s a truly useful book for many different people and will grow in popularity as the Linux operating system gains a wider audience.

I now have a much better appreciation of the Linux operating system than I did before, where I would otherwise read the online manual-styled documents but not get all the information as a whole and how it all fits together. So many times whilst reading the book I found myself saying things like: “Oh, so that’s why sys admin people do that”, or “Oh, now I get the organization of the file system”, or “So that’s how you automate processes with Bash scripts” or “That’s why people use a logical volume manager to organize partitioning”, etc. I highlighted a lot of ideas throughout.

Pros:
There is a substantial amount of material covering the Linux operating system and its use, with underlying computing fundamentals: see the Contents for the broad range of topics that are covered in depth. There are summaries at the end of each chapter highlighting the key concepts including the Linux commands. Shell scripting is thoroughly covered allowing the reader to write shell scripts to automate processes. A thorough explanation of Linux installation is provided allowing the user to intelligently set up one’s own machine in a flexible manner including a thorough discussion on partitioning. There are a substantial amount of references provided at the back of the book. There are questions that may be used to test one’s knowledge or by instructors for testing purposes if necessary, but the real benefit comes from hands-on usage: the real-world test. The book has satisfied my goal of becoming more independent when sitting in front of a computer with a different operating system, without continually having to rely on system admin support. Now the questions that I ask of system admin are more intelligent, and hence they are more willing to help me as they now see that I’m making a sincere effort.

Cons:
The index is quite brief and rather than a complete noun and verb listing, it is more conceptually oriented. For example, “firewall” and “IP Tables” are not in the index under “F” or “I”, but rather are found under “Network” (“N”). Similarly, “crond” isn’t under “C” but rather under “Service” (“S”). “Make” or “Makefile” don’t appear under “M”, but they may be found when referring to “Compilation”. In that regard, the reader needs to think in a more high-level conceptual manner when using the index. As a result of so much information being conveyed, the reader may feel somewhat overwhelmed at times and may find the book verbose or unnecessarily detailed. The section headings are numbered but unfortunately not in bold, so at times I had to flick backwards and forwards to find certain sections as I lost these in the body of the text. It would have been nice for keywords to have been in a bold font style, throughout the book, to make the reading more engaging.

Reading Approach:
The book can be read from start to finish in its entirety, e.g. at 1 chapter per day for 14 days. However, it’s probably better to start with Chapter 8 Installing Linux, so that the computer system is up and running, if the reader has had some exposure to Linux/Unix in the past. Then, when reading the book, the user can experiment with the material and learn by doing which would be more engaging than simply reading, and would also help in remembering commands. I never felt left behind when reading this book, but I have been exposed to Unix in the past. However, prior exposure isn’t necessary, since everything is covered in so much detail.

Notes:
As a reviewer I have read the whole book with the exception of Section 5.2.2 “emacs” and Section 6.6 “awk”, as these are not of interest to me in my current work. I think it may also be beneficial to read the book twice to let concepts sink in, or use it as a reference manual when working with Linux to complement manual pages or Internet-based material (noting the conceptual nature of the Index). The only other book I’ve read on Unix is “Unix in Plain English” by Reichard and Foster-Johnson. The two books can’t be compared as one deals with operating system commands only, and the other operating system concepts with a discussion on commands where relevant: both appear very useful together. However, to really know whether this book is for you, it’s best to thoroughly read the Contents section to see if it can solve your problems. CentOS is covered more deeply than Ubuntu, but this should not pose a problem for the user. I am tempted to provide examples here of the clarity of technical explanation, but these may not be relevant to your situation, but rest assured, they do exist.

Rating:
I give the book a 5-star rating for the following reasons: practical, relevant, caters for a broad audience, scientific, thorough, informative detail, and readable within a reasonable amount of time. The amount of time this book has saved me makes the price good value. The author has been very generous in sharing his obviously substantial body of knowledge here, so I kind of feel grateful for that.

Summary:
“Linux with Operating System Concepts” is a thorough, useful and practical book allowing the reader to have a better understanding of the Linux operating system with helpful information and examples on command usage, scripting, partitioning, installation and setup, that all applies to the real world.
