Found several big mistakes. Eastern Europe and the rest of nonwestern world is under represented. Great Schism of the Church overlooked...
One of the bigger mistakes-Serbia listed as central power allie of Austro-Hungary and Germany! Byzantine empire geographical description fails to mention Balkans as it integral part even if map clearly shows it.

A nice, highly illustrated, children's encyclopedia

Note - this is a review of a 2009 edition of what I believe is the same book. The author, Anita Ganeri, is the same as are the number of pages and the cover is similar, but the book is smaller, only 4.5x6 inches. I believe that this is a small size edition, republished by Parragon, but I am not absolutely sure that this this the case.

The text of the book is written in a straightforward manner and in my opinion at middle school level or above, but no reader should feel "talked down to", regardless of they level of historical background, it is just that the more complex nuances have been dispensed with in favor of a more direct approach. In addition to the over 1000 illustrations included in the book there is a timeline at the bottom of each page that summarizes the topic being covered. These topics (there are over 100 of them) cover more than just European history - they also include that of South America, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Asia. There is also a master timeline at the back of the book that summarizes the events occurring concurrently all over the world.

I bought copies of this book for my grandchildren (they were almost being given away as remainders). The small size of the book and the print is a problem for me, but should not be for them. (I have yet to give the books to them as they are still too young.) Children, and I suspect many adults, will find it a nice summary, although a bit of a superficial one.

Set in what remains some of the wildest country in the United States, Sound Wormy recalls a time when regulations were few and resources were abundant for the southern lumber industry. In 1901 Andrew Gennett put all of his money into a tract of timber along the Chattooga River watershed, which traverses parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. By the time he wrote his memoir almost forty years later, Gennett had outwitted and outworked countless competitors in the southern mountains to make his mark as one of the region's most seasoned, innovative, and successful lumbermen.

His recollections of a rough-and-ready outdoors life are filled with details of logging, from the first "cruise" of a timber stand to the moment when the last board lies "on sticks" in the mill yard. He tells how massive poplars, oaks, and other hardwoods had to be felled and trimmed by hand, dragged down mountain slopes by draft animals, floated downstream or carried by rail to the mill, and then sawn, graded, and stacked for drying. He tells of buying timber rights in a land market filled with "sharp" operators, where titles and surveys were often contested and kinship and custom were on an equal footing with the law.

Gennett saw more than potential "boardfeet" when he looked at a tree. He recalls, for instance, his efforts to convince the U.S. Forest Service to purchase undisturbed areas of wilderness at a time when its mandate was to condemn and buy up farmed-out and clear-cut land. One such sale initiated by Gennett would become the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness in North Carolina.

Filled with logging lore and portraits of the southern mountains and their people, Sound Wormy adds an absorbing new chapter to the region's natural and environmental history.

About the Author
Andrew Gennett (1874-1942) was a native of Nashville, Tennessee. He and his brother Nat founded the Gennett Lumber Company, which is still in operation. Nicole Hayler edited Sound Wormy for the Chattooga Conservancy, where she is development director. John Alger is a historian of forestry and logging and a former lumberman.

Sound Wood Wormy

Sound Wood Wormy is a biography, well actually an autobiography of Andrew Gennett, a pioneer lumberman in the rugged country along the Chattooga River between Georgia and South Carolina north of Madison, SC and up to the North Carolina stateline. It is based on the personal papers of Gennett and was edited by Nicole Hayler with a foreword by John Alger of Swannanoa, NC, a timberman of some reknown.
The one problem for the reader is the lack of any map that lets one know where Gennett was cutting, or splash-damming or visiting folks in his adventures. I resorted to a current trout fishing map for northeast Georgia which shows all the streams by name in the same area. Nevertheless, this is an extraordinary book and led to my contacting Gennett's grandson who is still in the lumber business in Asheville.
Not only is this interesting to logging enthusiasts, it is a window to the way folks lived in this isolated area that was bereft of roads or other forms of communication long after civilization had come to Tallulah Falls in Georgia or to Walhalla in South Carolina on either side of the Chattooga. Most of you will recall the Burt Reynolds movie "Deliverance" about four men from Atlanta who canoe down the river through the rapids of the Chattooga.
While at college in the area in the 1950's, my room-mate and I found a small community up near the tri-state juncture and had our own distrubing encouter with the locals and decided to move on instead of stopping for a Coke at the general store on a hot summer day. The banjo-picking youngster we saw may have been the same one that much later was in Reynold's movie.
Gennett's story is worth every penny for this book. Even if you are from the West Coast, you will be able to walk along with Andrew Gennett as he opened up the area to logging. His interactions with the local folks shows how he knew when to hold em and when to fold em. A raised shotgun can give one pause in negotiations.

This book is wrong about the Gennett's in Joyce Kilmer ...

This book is wrong about the Gennett's in Joyce Kilmer. Belton Lumber Co. owned it and was logged by the John H. Denton family until the mill burned down in TN. Then Babcock Lumber Company bout it with the Slickrock property and logged the head of Joyce Kilmer while logging Slick Rock just across the ridge until Calderwood dam was built and flooded the railroad to haul the logs to the mill. Then the Gennett Lumber company Bought it and set up a Mill in the now parking lot of Joyce Kilmer. It was then finished being logged under the supervision of W T Cloer for the Gennett Lumber Co.

Fascinating

Being raised a few miles from one of the first Gennett sawmills, I found this to be one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Gennett describes in fair detail various logging practices, and the technical vernacular is even footnoted to assist the reader with terms he/she has probably never heard.
The brothers' Gennett certainly had a knack for making money, but it was always after much investigation and hard work, and certainly risk. It was interesting to me how Andrew, from the upper crust of society, rolled his sleeves up and learned the art of cruising timber and sawmilling. Accounts of the long nights in the cold camping or boarding with mountaineer families while on timber cruises and logging operations were fascinating.
Gennett's views of the long arm of Uncle Sam and issues regarding private property rights are still echoed today.
I highly recommend to this book to anyone interested in the history of the Southern Appalchians, natural resource management, logging, or the American entreprenural spirit.

Information I have never seen anywhere else

Where is this guy and why isn't he teaching seminars? This is truly an incredible book. I have been reading books on energy medicine for over 20 years now and as a bodyworker who relies on energy healing I was so impressed with the content of this book. This guy is the real deal. He has a gift that he passes on to each of us. Not only does he discuss how human energy works in the body, but he actually gives the reader exercises and "how to" information so they can start using this practical wisdom. Most books only discuss how the energy flows and give whacky, new age-y exercises to follow, without giving any real practical "how to" advice. Not this book. There are lots of pertinent exercises to build the ability to sense energy. After putting his theories into practice, I noticed a marked increase in my ability to feel and see energy. I have searched for other works by this author to no avail. I hope he comes back out of obscurity and writes more, or teaches his profound wisdom in seminar settings. Thank you Mark. I loved it!!

An Impressive Guide to Our Subtle Anatomy and How to Work with It

I am sorry to say that I know nothing about Mark Rich - the author of this impressive book - apart from the few notes on the cover and in the introduction. In some senses I am rather pleased about that, because the book contains some unique information and my review is in no way colored by knowing him personally.

There are a great many books about the "energy systems" of the body, though I prefer to use the term "subtle systems" to include both the Information Matrix and the subtle energy that it animates and directs. Many are excellent. But the way in which people perceive and discern these subtle systems clearly has a strong subjective component.

There are at least two dozen variations on people's descriptions of these subtle systems, including huge variations in the numbers, colors and orientation of the chakras and the size and structure of the aura. Research performed in London in the early 1970s showed that the aura seen by many sensitives does not appear to exist in physical space. When subjects were placed behind a screen, a group of sensitives was unable to locate them. Does that mean that these subtle systems are something fanciful? Not at all: they are real and some recent research using sensitive equipment may be proving it. I am quite open about revealing that I have since early childhood been able to sense many of these subtle systems and like very many others I have been checked and trained.

Why this preamble? This book is, to my knowledge, unique. I have never before seen descriptions that precisely correspond with my own. That is not to say that either of us is objectively "correct," but simply that two people who have become very experienced and have been tested have come up with very similar answers.

This book is full of illustrations and explanations for what they mean, what the author has learned, and how you may be able to apply his experience and observations in your own life.

If you are interested in the subtle systems of the body this is one of the best books there is. I put it on a par with Donna Eden's Energy Medicine and Barbara Brennan's Hands of Light and Light Emerging.

Fascinating Subject

I am an a electrical engineer who has usually followed a very western medical science oriented view of health and fitness. I became interested in meditation and breathing becuase of the death of someone who was close to me. I bought this book, originally because I was interested in self healing. What I got out of it was a much stronger sense of who I am and and what I am doing with my own life, in addition to healing. Mark Rich gives a much bigger picture of who we are and how we function energetically. There are other books out there on this subject but this one seems to be written very matter of factly and straight to the point. I can relate to that! Highly recomended!

Very important - This is pretty much the same book...

... as the original. There are times when a book needs to have masculine packaging before some men will pick it up. I believe that is the idea here. So this is a book that you would purchase to give to that guy who could really benefit but would probably not care for the original cover, etc.

Great Book To Strengthen Every Relationship In Your Life

I have been dying for a good book. Everything I have in my arsenal is self help, inspirational type books and I was trying to find something different. My friend just started reading this in hopes of helping her relationship between her and her fianc� and she said I should try it. Then a friend posted on FB about it. This seems to be the trending book.

I ordered the paperback copy because I love to read an actual book. I'm on my phone / tablet enough as it is. I started reading this Saturday night and I couldn't put it down. It is so insightful. I jumped right to the back and took the quiz to see which Love Languages mine are. I was a little surprised at the results, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Now that I know my Love Languages, I can focus more on learning about those areas, but also focus on the areas where I didn't score as high.

Knowing your love language will help to strengthen your relationships around you. Not just your relationship with your spouse, significant other, etc, but with friends and family as well.

It's great to read this book with your partner too and have them take the quiz because then you can learn each other's Love Languages and satisfy their needs in a way that they need to be met based on their personal love language and vice versa.

The information in the book is not boring. It's incredibly insightful and so helpful, especially if you are struggling in any relationship or you are just trying to love yourself better.

A must read for everyone!

Great read; quick summary in my review.

I thought this was a pretty good (and quick and easy) read. I found it really eye-opening in terms of all relationships (not just romantic). It made me think a lot about my friendships and even my relationships with my children and how I show all these people in my life that they are cared and loved for. It also made me think about how other people might be showing that they care for me, but maybe it doesn't show the way I'd expect it to. I can't say that it'll be life-changing for everyone, but I think it's a good read for anyone as a means of helping them understand why sometimes, they might do something for someone, and that other person just doesn't see the value in it and vice versa. Sometimes it might be tricky to find out another person's love-language without quizzing them or digging really deep. And if you're hoping to strengthen any kind of relationship, I think it's good if both parties are on board with learning to reciprocate and understand the basis of these ideas.

I don't necessarily think you have to read the entire book to get the gist of it, either.

The 5 Love Languages (you can find this on the official website, too) are:
- Words of affirmation (compliments, praise, etc.)
- Acts of service (doing dishes/laundry/cooking/etc. for a spouse)
- Receiving gifts (Pretty self explanatory. This could be as simple as picking up your friend's favorite candy bar and randomly giving to him/her. Don't think this means you have to be dropping diamonds in your wife's lap every week.)
- Quality time (Also explanatory. Could be as simple as watching TV together quietly with your loved one.)
- Physical touch (Calm down, this could be as simple as holding hands or quick contact in passing.)

We often feel the most love when our particular love language is expressed to us and we also have tendency to use that love language on everyone else. But that's not what speaks the most to everyone. Learning other people's language can help you express your love for someone else in a much more effective and powerful way than just using what works best for you. As I said, this applies to all relationships! Learning this concept made me really think about my children and I knew right away which language spoke the most volumes to my four year-old and I try to consider this as much as possible in my daily interactions with her. Discussing with my husband which languages spoke the most to us gave us a better understanding of what has the most impact on each of our perspectives on our relationship.

Anyway, great concept overall and I found it to be very insightful as far as opening up my eyes to how others have expressed their feelings for me and how I can effectively reciprocate my feelings for them.
