A fascinating story of Frienship and Caring -and Hope!

"ONE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE" has all the ingredients of a good mystery story for children.
One will find there wealthy technocrats and naive workers. One will inhale the pure fresh air of the country but also the disgusting exhaust fumes of the big town's vehicles.

Additionally, "ONE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE" encourages the reader -whether adult or minor- to make comparisons and to reflect: on people, on money, on nature, on human intervention in nature (usually violent and abusive and usually for profit) on relationships, on love!

Mostly, however, "ONE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE" is a story of friendship and caring -and hope!

Thanks to Russell Bittner's ability to use the right words at the right occasion, the reader is kept alive through the entire story. And when the end of it comes with large menacing steps, making everybody think "That's it!Everything is lost",suddenly one discovers that "death" was but a prelude to birth!

Not being myself a resident of New York, where our story takes place, my first thought when I read "ONE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE", was that there must be a related tradition that inspired the author to write his story. To my great surprise I was informed, that such a "custom" simply does not exist. Pure imagination of the author (or rather of the child living inside the author!)

What am I to add? Only this: "ONE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE" must be read by the New York Mayor! So that every child who -in the future- might wonder "Why garbage trucks in New York City carry a lighted little pine on their front bumpers at Christmastime?", will find the answer in the present tale...

P.S. I envy Russell Bittner's future grandchildren!

Christmas turned Easter

This story which is as much for children as for adults begins deceptively with a description of corporate interests that often mistreat nature. When we sigh, imagining the politically correct story that might ensue from that beginning, we're taken by the heart and brought to the land of very appropriate spiritual Christmas feelings. We have a pine with a mission and a small pine who looks up to him as an example and how to live and...die. And that's when, by a poetical magic trick, Russell Bittner converts what apparently was a Christmas story into an Easter one. The sawn, fallen big pine becomes Christ and cross and starts his own Via Crucis to the Rockefeller Center, the new Golgotha. New York workers and loiterers as Romans, there's no vinegar but a lack of water, and the same unforgivable death replaces the Birth everyone expects at such a date. But, it's a Cristmas story after all, and in the end, the little pine and the garbage truck drivers give a very American lesson of hope.

As million of other people, I've been one of those who for years in a row went to New York in the beginning of December to watch the tree, all lights and luxury, a symbol of that capitalism I admire so much maybe because my country has consistently lacked it. The next time I'm in New York, I'll look to the tree with different eyes, though, unless I learn that the tree has been only uprooted and, after Christmas, taken back to the woods as it should be if Capitalism is as good as I want to believe it.

A Christmas story for adults

This has got to be the most unusual Christmas story I've ever read. One Little Christmas Tree is a parable filled with ecological messages, and highly critical of humanity's greed and obliviousness towards the consequences of its actions - from its celebrations to their aftermath. Even as we celebrate something, we kill it.

My only concern about this expertly-written book is that it seems aimed not so much at children, as much as adults, seeing how far it veers from what is seen as the traditional Christmas spirit. There is but the faintest redemption in the end, offering only a glimmer of hope. Make no mistake: this is no candy-wrapped tale, filled with jolly Santas and reindeer, and its moral is genuinely down-to-earth.

So, if you are looking for a different Christmas story, one that is written by a skilled and obviously very sensitive author, this is the ideal book for you.

I have mixed feelings about this book. First of all, I like Lynn Kurland because she tells a good story that has romance and is clean at the same time. It was great to read about some of my favorite characters too.

To me this book was very similar to "Garden in the Rain," which happens to be my favorite Kurland MacLeod book. The heroine is from Seattle - running from an ex - pretty much lost about everything in her business. And why is it fall in Scotland again? Surely spring is good too?

I felt like the romance between the two jumped fast really quick. I wish there had been more time between the two and more development there.

I was drawn in to the story but was left wanting to see more . And can there be a main character who's a Ferguson that isn't bad or annoying?

Excellent addition to the Macleod Series

Nathaniel Macleod has a problem. Ever since a certain day that he and his Uncle were golfing in Scotland, he has been thrown back in time. It's almost impossible to live normally as Nat never knows when to expect a trip. This becomes worse after he meets Emma, from Seattle, Washington. How can he woo and win the lovely lady when he goes astray so often.

Excellent premise for time travel and the usual interference from the Macleod clan make this a fine addition to the series. My only complaint is that both H/h seem to be in deep denial over the time traveling. The heroine is particularly obtuse on this subject after several trips and other incidents. Right about chapter 16, she launches into another maybe I had indigestion and dreamed it. Enough! I deducted a star when she even had the hero questioning his sanity. Otherwise this is one of my favorite series.

Slightly Different Time Travel Romance

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this time travel romance by Lynn Kurland. It was a little different in that there seemed to intentionally be more limited family involvement in this one and, even when there was some interaction, we didn't really get to see the "family interactions" of former favorites - like a couple of the MacLeod men were involved at one point and a couple of the women at another time, but not truly together. I missed that as I felt it didn't cause Emma and Nathaniel to seem as connected to the growing storyline I love so much with the MacLeods and DePiaget families.

However I truly enjoyed the growing relationship between Emma and Nate throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected "reveal" at the end. 4 stars.

Relevant, Irresistible, Endearing

Like the author, I too read and loved Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book stories of Mowgli and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. It was with frustration and disappointment then, that when I tried to share those wonderful stories with my own children, I discovered they were no longer relevant. My children weren't interested; I think because they are simply outdated. When this book, Running Wild, was recommended to my seven year old by her friend's mother, I let her read it first, knowing only that it had something to do with the Boxing Day Tsunamis and was a lovely story for children. When I read it myself afterward, I found that I was reading an updated Jungle Book. With brief references to the Iraq War, the story focuses largely on the effects of deforestation in a way that appeals to children. I think the book would most suit pre-teens and teenagers, but younger confident readers and adults will love most parts of this book too.
I now want to read more from this author for myself, not just for my kids. Definitely recommended as the best kids book I've read since Harry Potter.

Fantastic Read!

This is a fantastic story about a boy who's father is killed in Iraq and who travels to Indonesia with his mother "to get away from it all" - only to be struck mid-vacation by The Boxing Day tsumani. The boy is astride an elephant at the time, and the elephant flees into the jungle just before the wave hits, taking the boy with him. The boy spends a year alone in the jungle with the elephant, learning to survive by understanding the laws and spirit of the jungle. He has encounters with a tiger, a troop of orangutans... What's brilliant about this book is that although it is not a true story, it is highly believable. Animals are the central characters of the book, but they are realistically depicted and their behaviors are true and accurate - not fantastical as they would be in, say, a Disney film. A beautiful book that exposes children to the very real and very rich emotional lives of animals - and what is at stake if the rain-forest continues to be destroyed. The emotional lives of the orangutans as depicted in the book is particular poignant.

A very good read

Never disappointed with Morpurgos work! Written from a childs prospective he always manages to conjure up the emotions and feelings of a child. Full of imagery,drama and informative..one has a fun read and always learns so much in the process!My youngest son is now reading it... Well done Michael!

The Best Organizational Behavior Book You'll Ever Buy

Whether you are there or not yet, this book is the final destination through the vortex of your formal and informal study and experience in organizational behavior. The Gervais Principle resonates with my two dozen plus years studying and working inside large organizations and hits home with the most succinct explanation for the ongoing office dynamic I've ever read. The author adroitly uses the tv show The Office, along with cameos by Dilbert, Office Space, and other pop social commentary sources to flesh out what any honest (and non-Clueless) reader will conclude is the truest description of organizational behavior and company hierarchy you will ever read. The book was also close to 10,000 times cheaper than my moderately priced graduate management degree and, other than for some technical areas like finance and forensic accounting, more directly valuable.

It's the red pill

In the preface, the author writes "I've had people actually tell me that this series served as a sort of red-pill-blue-pill Matrix moment in their careers." I'm one of the people he's referring to.

In 2008, I was an overachieving software guy who had migrated into management. I had found it a difficult transition, to say the least. I kept making what my boss, and his boss, kept calling obvious mistakes. Each mistake I tried to understand, with varying degrees of limited success. Then a friend said, "You should check out this blog, ribbonfarm."

Reading the Gervais series was a crash course in what the author calls "organizational literacy". These essays gave me a detailed framework for understanding the roles one can play in a hierarchy, and how to navigate it with some degree of skill. I was able to turn my manager career around, going from disgrace to respect over the following two years.

Your mileage may vary, of course. But for me, the Gervais Principle was a pivotal document. I can't recommend it highly enough.

The bonus essay was worth the price of the ebook. :)

Wow. Just wow. Some books open you up to new ideas. This book straps you down, opens your skull with an autopsy saw and pours in molten reality. The Matrix paradox is overdone, but it applies here: red pill or blue pill? You decide.
