Caro-Kann: Bronstein-Larsen (Chess is Fun Book 18), by Jon Edwards

Jon Edwards deeply annotates ten games in the Bronstein-Larsen with emphasis upon his own correspondence games against some of the best players in the world. One of these games won the award for the best correspondence game of the year in 1997.

Unlike many other inexpensive chess e-books, these are fully annotated in understandable, simple language. The profuse use of diagrams make these among the first chess books that you can read WITHOUT A BOARD at your side.

Edwards won the 10th United States Correspondence Championship in 1997 and the 8th North American Invitational Correspondence Chess Championship in 1999.

Nice for the price, although not exactly what you might want
By Carlo
This product is valuable due to the rarity of in-depth treatments of the Bronstein-Larsen variation of the Caro-Kann, the last major one being an out-of-print book by Jeremy Silman. In general I prefer an annotated games approach to explaining openings and therefore was pleased to see that here. Anyone who wishes to play the variation and understand some of the key dynamics should get this, especially given the price.

It should be caveated, however, that the last third of the e-book is devoted to the 5...exf6 variation (ECO code B15), which no one else I have seen considers part of the Bronstein-Larsen variation, classified as B16 in ECO from the sequence 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4 Nf6 5 Nxf6+ gxf6. Since only the theoretical main line (6. c3) of the Bronstein-Larsen is actually treated in this book, with major real-world options like 6. Nf3 Bg4 ignored, I thought the inclusion of the B15 material was a significant detraction from the work's overall potential utility. One would think that anyone purchasing a book on the Bronstein-Larsen would want to see more material on that variation, rather than a separate treatment of the long-ignored and relatively boring 5...exf6 variation. (I still blame it for Korchnoi's defeat in his first world championship match with Karpov in 1978.)

Technically the e-book is well done, with the diagrams (one per page) showing up clearly on the Kindle and the annotations well-written.
