A lot of assumptions and borderline ethical issues

I'll start with the good. I did find some areas of this book very helpful: different types of managers, how to work with your coworkers, and the section about negative/'evils' that exist in the workplace such as types of lies.

That said, some of these techniques certainly would not fit in with the company culture of my current employer. For example, lining up other jobs... word spreads fast and if it were discovered that an employee was 'exploring' there's a very good chance that would be discovered and would not end well (i.e., would be seen as 'sneaky' and affect current job which then may affect reputation/respect).

Advocating to lie to your manager because they do it to you? Doesn't sit right with me... I've advanced quickly in my career by having strong ethics and being honest with my managers which results in building trust.

Advocating to lie if your manager wants you to? No thanks. I'd rather find a new job them compromise values.

Those are the examples taht come to mind which didn't leave a good feeling... maybe this is the way the business world works but that doesn't work for me.

Encourages to appreciate career and strive towards even better ones

This book consolidated a lot of the business ideas that I needed to keep in mind to make my career easier to manage and plan for. I've been a fan of Geoffrey James articles at Inc.com for some time now and I only wish I read the book last year and not put it off. I find his articles incredibly helpful in gaining the right mindset for performing at the top level. They are like the intro to so many of the great intro Sales books out there. That is they communicate the importance of getting your attitude right, first.

With the book sectioned into short passages, I found the topics to the point and just long enough for me to get through without regretting the time spent doing so. It was so terse that I plan on reading it again to reflect more on where I can improve.

Many of this author's ideas reminded me of another book I read 10 years ago called "The IT Career Builder's Toolkit" by Cisco Press (http://www.amazon.com/The-IT-Career-Builders-Toolkit/dp/1587131560/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) in that it encourages the reader to bolster your boss and department, be the best at work, or find something else immediately. Prior to reading it, I was miserably struggling to get the projects I wanted instead of making things better for myself in a positive light by making things better at work. That book provided the coaching I needed stop all of the really bad habits and reignite my career at the time.

Therefore, before reading Geoffrey's book, I didn't need a grand awakening as much as a simple encouragement and reminders to keep going and how to make the positive changes I need at this point. I expect it will provide for some time to come.

In a nutshell, this book provides the reader with the tips to appreciate the job he/she has for what it provides and strive towards even better ones.

Common sense not commonly practiced

This book distills important how-to-survive and how-to-thrive work and career information into pithy, punchy, digestible chapters. It makes for a great reference for tough situations, and a helpful reminder about what you thought you knew.

A lot of the book's advice reads like common sense. Like most such advice, it is common sense that's not commonly practiced.

This is not a fluffy management, leadership, or business book. It takes a different path to "success" -- one that focuses on self-reliance and knowing the score. There are no graphs showing pricing models or postulating relationships between unquantifiable variables like loyalty or experience or effort. There are no wasted adverbs here. The book is written like you wish all business communications were written, clear and to the point -- a hallmark of Geoffrey James's "no biz-blab" style that he espouses in his regular blog. It encourages you to take control of your career through a combination of being self-centered and altruistic. Put yourself first, but you have to give to get. Keep your interests and goals in mind, but influence others by understanding their motivations.
