Nel Noddings is Lee Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, at Stanford University. She is a past president of the National Academy of Education, the Philosophy of Education Society, and the John Dewey Society. It could also be a time when students can discover what they might like to do for a career

Nel Noddings Education and Democracy in the 21st Century presented ideas pertaining to educational reform that I think a lot of people would be interested in, and probably would want to pursue. To take an example, Noddings proposes that middle school or junior high not be a time when grades are given for performance but which is nevertheless a time when students can take electives and discover their interests on their own time. It could also be a time when students can discover what they might like to do for a career. I frankly loved policy suggestions like these, but the book was light on concrete proposals, I'm sad to say.

The reason I did not enjoy Noddings' book as much as I would have hoped is that I had different expectations for what the book would be. I expected the book would be a diagnosis of some of the particular conditions of problems with American education and its relationship with issues of American democracy. There was some attempt at diagnosis but a lot of the data were anecdotal and very light on statistics. I also expected the book would include more information on what some of the proposals are to rectify the situation--if not Noddings' own proposals, then, other peoples'--ordinary Americans, school boards, policy analysts. Instead, there were hints at strategies to deal with the problem but the goals were not clear enough to my liking. This is less a book of advocacy for educational reform and more a very rough sketch of an educational vision.

A must read for Education Policy makers! Nel gets that our form of democracy is at risk, not just by what we don't teach but also what we don't do in schools. Moreover she raises important questions about equity and equality and how current trends in school policy may indeed undermine noble intentions.

Misleading Promotion

This is a book by a good writer who has a remarkable amount of specialized knowledge. His other books- on survival, for instance- display an encyclopedic knowledge of things which will help keep you alive in trying circumstances.
This book is flawed by two problems; one is the misleading hype of the publisher (this is not, as the subtitle suggests, "A complete guide to unarmed fighting techniques"); it is also flawed by the difficulty the author had in deciding what to teach and what to withhold because it was too dangerous to teach a civilian population.
If the book had been subtitled "a basic guide to self-defense", it would have lived up to it's title. And if the author had been able to decide what level of damage was "okay" for what level of threat, it would have been a better book. While he withholds the "dangerous" techniques, he suggests fingers to eyes as a solution to "unwelcome attentions" when a man puts an around her shoulder in a bar.
If that's not dangerous, I misunderstand the effect of fingers thrust into the eyes with the hips rotated for more power.
The publisher should go to Mr. Wiseman as ask him to write a different book, which actually teaches the syllabus with which he is familiar. Since Applegate has published, and reprints of the hand-to-hand combat manuals of the army and marines are easily available, Mr. Wiseman should not feel inhibited about sharing his vast knowledge because the techniques are too dangerous or violent.
In general, this book is a good basic self-defense book if the reader has the sense to realize that the eye-gouges should be restricted to situations of extreme provocation.
If a reader wants to review the spectrum of military self-defense, the reader will be better served with the reprints of the Applegate or Fairbairn books, or reprints of Army Field Manual 21-150, or the Marine hand-to-hand book.
I hope Mr. Wiseman writes another book which fully sets out his knowledge and extraordinary practical experience. I would happily buy it.

Concise

Straight forward, concise, and practical. I'm a practitioner of self-defense of any style I can get someone to teach me, and this book is just one more resource in my library. It's not a training text book, it's just a simple guide to some of the basic, yet effective, techniques used by the SAS (and many other law enforcement/military agencies). A bonus is that the first portion of this book is dedicated to avoiding and preventing confrontations. Only after that does the author go into how to deal with a confrontation. There's also a section on what happens after your put your opponent down, which is something that most people don't address. Self-defense and combat are not confined to the physical struggle. One has to prepare for the before and after, as well.

Excellent Primer For Civilian Combatants

I purchased this title for a civilian friend of mine who was interested in the unarmed combat techniques I was taught while serving with this Regiment in Rhodesia during the 1970's. While I agree with another reviewer that remarked that the laws in The United States and Great Britain (where I also served during the Faulklands campain with The 3rd Para) are rather draconian with respect to self-defense, the book is very informative regarding the basic tactics and pressure points of the human frame, i.e. body, and is indeed a wonderful primer for the lay-man.

A small bit of inside information regarding The Regiment: Unlike the films, which portray every fighting soldier as 6'4" 280lbs, the average height and weight of a member of the SAS and The Parachute Regiment is 5'7" 150lbs, only showing that it is not size that determines a man or woman's strength but their Will to Survive, Endurance and Skill in unarmed combat that determine the outcome of any situation. My Instructor was a 5'2" 48y.o. man who had jumped with The Regiment in the jungles of Malaya (today Malaysia) and I feared him more than any of our oppenants during the war in Rhodesia!

To my fellow American Service Veterans whose reviews are listed and speak disparagingly of this book: "Get Buggered!" The Regiment pre-dates The Green Berets, DELTA and Navy SEALS by nearly 20 years and most of the techniques they were taught were offered by The Regiment to it's American Cousins during their formation. And we are still in close contact with these units to this day in the area of COIN Operations.

Not just yogurt and olive oil

Back in the 50's, it was the Hunza people who the were exemplars of longlived folk in popular literature about healthy living. The Hunza valley is popularly believed to be the inspiration for Shangri-la, the place of the immortals in James Hilton's novel "Lost Horizon." The Hunza live in high altitude, eat whole grains, and this was the model for much of health food lore in the 50's. Then there were the Georgians, famous in the 80's, whose long life was attributed to the consumption of yogurt. Now it's the Okinawans, Mediterraneans and Costa Ricans who have the secret of long life.

The "Blue Zone" is how these areas with a high percentage of centenarians is designated. In this book, the author combines lessons from various zones around the world. In this way, not only are the different cultures described, but the commonalities are easily derived from the chapters. And they are hardly surprising, but it's great to have them all in one book because you can see that it's not yogurt or fermented mare's milk or a diet rich in tofu and fermented bean paste and fish--it's healthy habits. They are pretty much (no surprise here), a diet including plenty of fresh, unchilled water, lots of vegetables, limited meat and fats and sweets, and the habit of hard farm work or walking and exercise and having a richly entwined family life and close group of friends--a support system. (Doesn't the Bible say "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you." Exodus 20:12)

This book is excellent not only for the interesting anthropological information, but because you can see that long life is really something that is a matter of habits and practices, not just eating a bowl of yogurt or using olive oil instead of butter.

The Geography of Healthful Living and Extreme Longevity

Let's begin with content unmentioned by previous reviewers. In the United States, only about one male per 20,000 reaches age 100 (p. 44). The almost-daily consumption of nuts is important to good health and long life (e. g., p. 130). On the other hand, supplementation with DHEA, human growth hormone, or melatonin is questionable and probably harmful (p. 13). Friendly intestinal bacteria are important, and these are thwarted by processed foods, excessive consumption of meat, surgery, etc. (p. 92).

The geographical format of this book takes the reader to "Blue Zones" (areas with high concentrations of long-lived people) all over the world. One of them is right in the USA--the Seventh Day Adventist community 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Now consider the Okinawans. Though not Japanese themselves, they had been conquered by the Japanese, and forced to fight against the Americans. Many Okinawans, frightened by tales of American atrocities, committed suicide upon the approach of the American forces. Instead, the Americans helped the Okinawans. Ironically, however, the Okinawans were subsequently hurt by the Americans--but in a totally unexpected and unintentional way. Americans built a lot of fast-food joints, and the health of the Okinawans--especially the younger ones--began to decline.

This book not only provides suggestions for extending one's lifespan, but also gives the reader an invaluable set of geography lessons. In the end, centenarians really cannot tell us why they lived to an age of 100 or more (p. xxi). But this book is fascinating nonetheless. There is a bibliography at the end of the book for further reading on the topics of longevity, better health, stress-free living, etc. The citations come from magazine articles, books, and scientific and medical journals.

Proteinuria.......This book offers the best information!

John Hewitt has provided us with a very well-written scientific book on proteinuria as it relates to diabetes, renal failure and obesity. Although I am a Registered Nurse and have learned about proteinuria in my college education, there is always more to learn. This book provided me with new information that I can use in both my personal life and professional practice. I often see new nurses fumble with a good understanding of the the renal system and kidney disease. This book can serve as a great reference and refresher to what they learned in school.

I also use this book as a reference for some of my patients that have proteinuria. It is a great educational tool. Thank you again for such a well-written and informative book.

Relaci�n y no Religi�n

Soy uno de las tantas personas que ha recibido diariamente esta palabra, no es un remplazo de las Escrituras, es una declaraci�n diaria de cada pasaje que cobra vida y que se toma para uno, es un complemento que permite que uno incremente su relaci�n con Dios y no una religi�n como muchas veces se toma, como si uno tuviese un rito diario.

La frescura y la originalidad espiritual con la que est�n hechos las palabras del cielo, hace que esta recopilaci�n y algo m�s, sea para considerar por los lectores.

Espero que sean muchos los bendecidos por esta edici�n
