Noddings argues that we must find ways to preserve our commitment to democratic values while adapting to the societal changes that have occurred since Dewey wrote Democracy and Education almost a century ago. About the Author
Nel Noddings is Lee Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, at Stanford University. She is a past president of the National Academy of Education, the Philosophy of Education Society, and the John Dewey Society. Her books include When School Reform Goes Wrong, The Challenge to Care in Schools, Educating Citizens for Global Awareness, Educating for Intelligent Belief or Unbelief, and Educating Moral People.

It could also be a time when students can discover what they might like to do for a career

Nel Noddings Education and Democracy in the 21st Century presented ideas pertaining to educational reform that I think a lot of people would be interested in, and probably would want to pursue. To take an example, Noddings proposes that middle school or junior high not be a time when grades are given for performance but which is nevertheless a time when students can take electives and discover their interests on their own time. It could also be a time when students can discover what they might like to do for a career. I frankly loved policy suggestions like these, but the book was light on concrete proposals, I'm sad to say.

The reason I did not enjoy Noddings' book as much as I would have hoped is that I had different expectations for what the book would be. I expected the book would be a diagnosis of some of the particular conditions of problems with American education and its relationship with issues of American democracy. There was some attempt at diagnosis but a lot of the data were anecdotal and very light on statistics. I also expected the book would include more information on what some of the proposals are to rectify the situation--if not Noddings' own proposals, then, other peoples'--ordinary Americans, school boards, policy analysts. Instead, there were hints at strategies to deal with the problem but the goals were not clear enough to my liking. This is less a book of advocacy for educational reform and more a very rough sketch of an educational vision.

Democracy at Risk

A must read for Education Policy makers! Nel gets that our form of democracy is at risk, not just by what we don't teach but also what we don't do in schools. Moreover she raises important questions about equity and equality and how current trends in school policy may indeed undermine noble intentions.
